What is Jock itch?
Jock itch is the common name for ring worm of the groin, or tinea cruris which is the medical term for the condition. Jock itch is a fungus infection and is caused by mold-like fungi called dermatophytes which thrive on the warm, moist area around the groin which allows it to multiply.

What causes jock itch?
Jock itch is normally caused by coming into contact with some other human being or even an animal which already has the infection. You can get the infection by touching somebody else's ringworm, sharing towels, etc. Animals also spread this disease if you touch an animal with a ringworm infection and touch your groin area afterwards you may become infected. It is also possible to get jock itch if you suffer from athlete's foot. Jock itch is caused by the same fungus which caused athletes foot, so if you happen to touch your feet and then your groin area you may get a nasty surprise - in the form of jock itch.

What are the signs and symptoms of jock itch?
The symptoms of jock itch include:

•?itching, chafing, or burning in the groin, thigh, or anal area
•?skin redness in the groin, thigh, or anal area
•?flaking, peeling, or cracking skin
•?a circular, red, raised rash with elevated edges

Jock itch can affect anyone, guys or girls, who tend to sweat a lot. However people who suffer from diabetes or obesity are more susceptible to the infection.

How do you prevent jock itch?
The one most important factor in the prevention of jock itch is good hygiene around the groin area. Make sure you keep the area clean and as free of sweat as is possible. Also make sure the area is dry by using a clean towel. If you tend to play a lot of sports or are an athletic person try to wash the area as often as possible and try not to wear tight fitting clothes.
