Then they fill up Form 287 and manually submit it to Companies House, requesting an address change for the Registered Office. This new address is often a post box or some property the scammers have hired for a month or two. The Companies House accordingly modifies its database about the new location of company's Registered Office.
Now the fun starts. The fraudsters open new bank accounts in the company's name, print fake letterheads carrying their own trading address, phone and fax numbers and email IDs and start placing orders all over for acquiring goods and services on credit and even obtain financial loans. The sellers are instructed to mail all invoices to the Registered Office.
After sometime, the scammers quietly disappear with the booty. The innocent company whose corporate ID was hijacked remains blissfully unaware until the debtors come knocking on the door or initiate legal proceedings to recover their dues. According to one estimate, the 287 scam is worth GBP 50 million each year! Small and medium companies are particularly at risk of being scammed this way.
The 287 scam is possible because Companies House does not run elaborate checks on Form 287 and amends its database automatically without getting proper confirmation.
It currently holds millions of documents in its database and says it is helpless in the matter as it has neither the resources nor the power to conduct background checks on every Form 287 to authenticate the information provided by companies. This loophole is exploited by the scammers to deadly effect. Worse, they use the same procedure to change the names of company directors.
