This trouble generally occurs in winter season due to the dry weather state of affairs.
Cracks in the skin on heels are normally known as heel crack. They generally occur when skin becomes dry and worsen the thick, fragile calluses on heels. Daily routine consist of many tasks like standing, walking on feet that places enough pressure onto brittle skin that small cracks open in the epidermal layer of the skin.
Cracked heels causes- Cracked heels are a general occurrence for senior citizens or people who are always on their feet thus put forth pressure on the feet pad. It can influence either the heels or one of the heels. But most frequently, cracked heels affect both the feet.
The problem is caused by the deficiency of vitamins, minerals and zinc. Climatic conditions can also be responsible for the problem of cracked heels. Person who is overweight may increase the pressure on the normal fat pad under the heel and this cause this to expand sideways and if the skin lacks flexibility the pressure on the feet lead to cracked heels.
Cracked heels symptoms- The person who is having heel cracks may have red and crumbling patches on the feet's skin. The skin started flaking and itching also occurs in the area. In the extreme conditions bleeding occurs from the cracks.

Home remedies for cracked heels -Generally, this is an artistic problem but some patients experience deep cracks that feel painful and can even bleed or get infected. So as the days grow colder, take the following steps into your schedule when your feet start cracking under pressure.
Generally applying a heavy layer of creams and lotion relieve the problem but using some items that can be easily got in the kitchen can cure this. To get rid of cracked heels you should apply a ripe banana on the heels and leave it for 10 minutes to dry. After 10 minutes wash it of with water, this remedy will prove helpful in providing relief from the pain of heel cracks. Do not expose your feet to extreme climate i.e., extreme cold or extreme heat.
You can steep your feet in the lemon juice for 10minutes and try the therapy once a week this will provide you an immediate relax. A regular application of a mixture of glycerin and rosewater is good and valuable to soothe and cure cracked heels.
Cracked heels are one of the most common beauty problems caused by drying of skin. The desire to wear attractive foot wear will remain just that with cracked heels. Cracked heels are also referred to as heel fissures. When these fissures are deep they may bleed and become painful. Some times they may also get infected.

What causes cracked heels?
According to ayurveda the cracked heel is caused by vitiation of Vata. Due to vitiation of vata the skin becomes dry, rough and fissured.
Walking bare foot for long distances vitiates vata causing cracked heels.
Dry and cold weather increases vata in body and may cause cracks on the heels. The same weather conditions worsen the already present cracks or fissures on heels.
Usually the process of sweating keeps our skin moist and soft. Absence of or inactive sweat glands cause dryness of skin. Vitiated vata dries up sweat glands.
People who have dry skin tend to develop cracked heels easily.
Continued pressure on feet causes cracking of skin on heels. This may be due to prolonged standing or over weight.
Thin soled shoes, Open backed shoes, heel spurs, Surgery of lower extremities, flat feet, high arched feet and diseases like psoriasis, eczema etc also cause fissured heels.
Self care for cracked heels
Avoid thin soled shoes or footwear and open backed shoes.
Use pumice stone bars to remove thick, dead skin of heels.
Apply medicated herbal balm which keeps the skin of heels soft and closes fissures.
Liberal application of herbal moisturizing lotion keeps your feet soft and attractive.
The skin of feet lacks oil glands. Hence apply herbal moisturizing lotion before going to bed and put on cotton socks. This tip helps to maintain the softness of skin of heels.
Reduce body weight and do not stand for a long time.
Never cut hard edges of fissures with blade, scissors or razor.
Diabetic patients should immediately consult their physician if the fissures persist for a long time and show color changes.
A regular foot bath and foot massage helps to keep the skin on heals healthy and soft.
