Unfamiliar Paris
by Vasilisa Krolikova, Vas
Even the most unsociable person will certainly find his or her own Paris. Among endless boulevards and narrow alleys, broad bridges and small squares, medieval temples and newest pyramids you will really feel like home. Paris is one of the main world crossroads and a quiet province at the same time. It consists of numerous towns and villages, so everyone can find a residence to his or her liking. Paris’ character is bright and elusive, just like blue shades of the sky above. And so is the character of the Parisians themselves.
Here one can find a cocktail of judiciousness and light-mindedness, practicalness and romanticism. One person finds such contradictions charming, the other considers it irritating
No one knows where Paris will make you fall in love with it. Perhaps that’ll happen in the Monso Park? Quiet and harmonious, it contrasts with bustling and busy quarters surrounding it. Or perhaps you’ll be attracted by reckless Montmartre? Or charming Latin Quarter? Who knows…
If you are fond of tranquil and cosy places, take a train to the Versailles. Get off in Chaville, a sleepy town…Buy a bunch of flowers at the station– and you’ll hear an amazingly correct Russian speech. Getting into a conversation with a pleasant old lady you’ll learn that the town was a residence place of the emigrants who didn’t have enough money to settle down in a prestigious XVI district…and you can spend the whole day immersed in a nice conversation or just strolling along small provincial alleys…
If you get tired of the dreamy and quiet places, go to the Montmartre. Enjoy the peculiar atmosphere of animated streets, crowded by vendors and tourists. It seems that the very air of this area is filled with danger, adventures and merriment.
And going a bit further you’ll find yourself at the greatest flea market. This is the place where the past and the present collide…only here you can turn into a happy owner of a pharmaceutical vial of the 19th century or a silk top hat, which could have belonged to Maupassant.
Getting hungry, go to one of the numerous restaurants in the neighbourhood. Order a Tartar beafsteak – raw stuffing with unboiled egg and spices. The dish is very popular with the women who drive night taxis. These stern women know that the dish is very nourishing. So if you are really hungry or simply want to taste something exotic – favour this dish!
At night go to the left bank of the Seine…here you’ll reveal one more shade of Paris with its life that never stops, idle walkers and vivid personalities who start living at night…your heart will be won…that’s when you’ll understand… that you’ll never understand the city! It will captivate you and we never let you go…so make no resistance!
