Problem With The Internet

Saturday morning, the first call came in.



"WHAT HAPPENED TO MY WEBSITE?" the client asked.

I went to their site and instead of the usual webpage; there was a black page with a big headline DEFACED and a photo of some warrior guy with a sword, there was even an email left there.

We got hacked all of our own sites and many of our clients who host through us. I use a 3rd party supplier for web hosting and now I had no idea if it was just us or was it ALL of their sites.

A call was placed to their support team which never answered (just to add to the anxiety that was building at warp speed).

Then I started thinking about this...

The hacker did this for no apparent reason other than ego. To show he did it and even supply his email (I never checked if it was a real email, that would probably make him even happier if I emailed).

Christmas season on a Saturday, not good to have your store closed. Not good at all.

What options did we have?

1. Find another hosting service that would take longer to move everything over than it probably would to fix the problem

2. Redirect everything to other places (assuming we did have a secondary hosting account somewhere)

3. Cry

4. Scream

We opted to wait for our hosting service. Which (surprise, surprise got to love techies) never phoned to update us (emails were down as well that isn't a bad thing in my eyes).

I ended up calling them again to get an update (this time spoke with someone) and the hacker took down the whole server and they were restoring it.

All said and done, 7 hours after we noticed it being down it was back up.

Imagine if you are doing $50,000 a day during the Christmas season!

Gone never to be recovered.

Plus the long term damage of the perception on your website being down is beyond immediate measure.

So what can you do to avoid this?

1. Make sure your web host is a good one

2. You could have a backup hosting account with another provider (and should, especially if you are doing high sales volumes) for the extra $500 $1,000 per year, pretty cheap insurance)

3. Move it all offline not that good of an option. Even that is not fail proof as any number of things can go wrong.

I think the best route is to have an alternative hosting account with a different supplier even have the majority of your sites posted there so that, in the case of emergency, you can redirect all your web sites to the other host.

Not good though big losses incurred by some and a definite loss in faith with their service (7 hours to recover?).

This had very little to do with advertising... other than the fact that your advertising costs would be a complete waste if the site was down (we did have some ads running so we have no idea how much was lost due to this either)!

It was a rant, but also a word of warning, have some form of backup plan. It may never happen to you but WHAT IF it did?

Think about it, it happened to us and it very well could happen to you.
Problem With The Internet
Thankfully, with the versatility the internet offers, there are many ways one can find that can assist in optimizing the potential of a website and/or business in generating traffic. While there are ways to jumpstart your traffic flows, many sites don't have the resources available to generate more traffic for your site.

Technically, you don't have to spend a cent to generate traffic for your business; all you need is the proper mindset and a lot of eagerness. You also possess the drive and perseverance to do hard work and research to generate more traffic for your site. Bottom line, instead of spending money, you are going to be investing what I like to call, ?sweat equity.?

Ok, so how nice would be to have more traffic for your site without spending a single cent? Sounds perfect. After all, there are a tremendous amount of websites out there have articles offering tips and guidelines on how to generate traffic using only free methods. Because it is technically possible to promote your business without spending any of your hard earned cash, it may take time, and a lot of it. I'm not going to sugar coat this for you. You get better chances by paying for your advertisements, but at least you have a fighting chance with some of these free methods I'm about to tell you.

Take advantage of online forums and online communities. And this doesn't mean you spam these boards. It's the easiest way to get yourself kicked off, possibly banned forever. Not to mention, piss off a lot of people along the way (pardon that phrase, but it can get pretty nasty out there).

The great thing about forums and online communities is that you can target a certain group that fits the certain demographic that you are looking for. You can discuss lots of things about your particular niche. You can ask questions, answer other people's questions, and really start to become known as a ?go-to? person when it comes to a particular subject. Another great advantage is that you know what you are getting into and you will be prepared.

With online communities and forums, you can build a reputation for yourself and your company. Show them what you are made of and wow them with your range of expertise about the subject: with that you can build a reputation and build trust with the people in your expertise and knowledge. If you are just participating in these forums to gloat about yourself, or to shove your business opportunity down other people's throats, you are probably better off not even visiting these sites. People will not be receptive to what you are trying to do. These are places where you build relationships with other people. Plain and simple.

You can also make use of newsletters. Provide people with a catalog of your products, along with interesting and resourceful articles. If you make your newsletter interesting and entertaining, more people will sign up for your newsletter and recommend it to other people. The more people who sign up for your newsletter, the more people there will be visiting your site, in turn increasing your traffic. I personally have random giveaways with my weekly e-zine, which keeps people reading week after week.

Another great way to generate free traffic is link exchanging. You don't have to spend a cent with this method. All you have to do is reach an agreement with another webmaster. With exchanging links, both sites will benefit, since any traffic that goes to one site could potentially click on the link of the other site as well. This works well especially when both sites feature the same niche, which I highly recommend.

Write articles that could pique the attention of people that have interest in your product is another free method of generating traffic. Try writing articles that will provide tips and guides to other professionals. Writing articles that provide good service and knowledge to other people will provide the necessary mileage your traffic flow needs. Not to mention, it's a great way to market yourself and your company. This is an important concept.

Many sites offer free submission and posting of your articles. When people find interest in your articles, they have a good chance of following the track by finding out where the article originated. Include a link or a brief description of your company with the article and there's a great probability that they will go to your site.

And last, but certainly not least, write good content for your site. Many search engines track down the keywords and keyword phrases your site uses and how they are used. It is not a requirement that your web content be done by a professional content writer. You can do this on your own; just remember that you have to make content for your site as entertaining and informational as possible. It should provide certain requirements as well as great quality. Generally, internet users use search engines to find what they are looking for. Search engines in return use keyword searching in aiding their search results. With the right keywords, you could get high rankings in search engine results without the costs.

All of these methods are tried and proven drive free traffic to your site. What's more, this will be targeted traffic. So, as you can see, all it takes is a bit of effort and extended man hours. Nothing in life is ever free. Learn all you can about the methods depicted here and you will soon have a site with a great traffic flow without the usual costs that come with it.
