The chemical properties of citric acid resembles a lot to other carboxylic acids. Upon haeting beyond the temperature 175 celcius citric acid decomposes through the loss of carbon di oxide and water.

Citric acid can be used effectively in the treatment of for diseases characterized by defective keratinization including dandruff. For this reason citric acid is widely used in the cosmetic industry especially in hair care products and shampoos as an antidandruff agent.

Generally the citric acid, which is, used in hair care products and shampoos are derived by fermentation of crude sugars.

Citric acid is known to have antioxidant and toning properties and also it perfectly balances the acid-alkali levels. Most part of the citric acid that is used as an antidandruff agent belongs to the group of alpha hydroxy acid.
