The classes can be conducted from anywhere in the world and all that is needed is that the student must do the work that is required of him or her.

None of them have any need to travel to any traditional college in order to join the course; usually the courses are conducted through web and internet seminars, along with chat sessions and real-time lectures.

Another upside to distance education for students is that they can still balance work and family along with their studies. Instead of being away at a traditional brick-and-mortar college for 6-8 hours a day they can be home and attend to their family while they are attending courses with distance learning colleges. Indeed, balancing college courses and work is a very difficult thing to do, but distance learning and learning the course online shifts the focus and makes it much easier!

Cons of Distance Learning

Just as there are upsides to distance learning there are also downsides to it. For starters, students and professors are not able to interact just as they would in a normal classroom setting. Of course, there is always the option of meeting outside the web classroom once in awhile, but the fact that distance learning courses are conducted entirely online adds some sort of interesting paradigm to the whole business of learning. Professors are not able to get to know their students as well and students are not able to know their professor as well, either.

One con to the issue of online learning is that the college may not be properly accredited. Accreditation is important for a variety of reasons, but it is most important for those that are planning to seek employment with those organizations that require that an "accredited" college or university was attended. Not all distance learning and online colleges and universities are accredited and you should definitely look more favorably upon those that are!

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to choose online education and there are only a few downsides to the issue that can be overlooked. The popularity of distance learning courses speaks for itself as far as how many people have been interested in distance learning in the past few years and that number continues to grow as colleges and universities are starting to offer more of these distance learning opportunities!
