Pros And Cons Of Drug Testing

    View:
Saliva Drug Testing

Benefits: Saliva drug testing kits are easy to use and non-invasive. As in the case of urine drug testing, saliva drug testing does not require separate bathroom facilities. Even fairly recent drug use can be detected using saliva testing. Moreover, as the saliva sample can be monitored closely, there are lesser chances of the sample being substituted as in case of a urine test. Only a few minutes are needed for obtaining the results. Different kinds of saliva tests can be utilized to detect the use of different drugs. It is an ideal method to detect recent drug use.

Limitations: It is unfortunate that most people are not aware of the benefits of saliva drug testing. Moreover, there are a lot of false beliefs regarding saliva drug testing, which have been spread mostly by laboratories as they have feel threatened that they might lose money on account of on-site saliva drug testing.

Urine

Benefits: A urine drug test can be undertaken at the laboratory or at any other place, with the help of a kit. It is the test of choice for most people, and is even accepted by the government. Hence, it is sometimes referred to as “the gold standard".

Limitations: If the urine sample collection is not closely observed, there is the possibility that the specimen might be substituted, leading to erroneous results. Drugs can be detected in the urine only a short time after they have been consumed. Hence, if a person has consumed drugs just prior to the test, it would not be reflected in the urine test. Moreover, for conducting a urine drug test, proper bathroom facilities are required. According to the SAMHSA or NIDA-5 guidelines, the drugs that are currently most abused in the society are not tested.

Hair Drug Testing

Benefits: Hair drug testing can detect drugs consumed by the user more than 90 days ago. Hence, such tests are very useful in certain circumstances. Hair drug testing is very easy to undertake. As the sample can be collected under direct supervision, there are very few chances of the sample being changed Fairly accurate and reliable results can be obtained through hair drug testing.

Limitations: The major limitation of hair drug testing is the requirement of laboratory facilities to test the sample. Moreover, drugs consumed recently before the test cannot be detected in such a test. A time period of around a week is required for the drugs consumed to be reflected in the results of the test. Hair drug testing kits are also more expensive as compared to the other methods of testing. A drug user can resort to shaving off his hair in order to avoid the detection of drugs. There is a higher possibility of the drug test giving positive results when the user has darker hair.

Spray (Sweat) Drug Testing

Benefits: Sweat drug testing is also very easy to undertake. It is a non-invasive method of drug testing. Moreover, there is no need for bathroom facilities for the collection of the sample, unlike urine drug testing. Drugs consumed by the user a few weeks ago can also be detected through sweat drug testing. The sample can be obtained under direct supervision and hence, there are lesser chances of manipulation of the sample. A sweat drug test kit can provide the results within a few minutes.

Limitations: There are high chances of a sweat sample getting contaminated. Moreover, the rate of sweat production of different donors is different, due to which it is sometimes difficult to draw accurate results. These tests are less popular as compared to saliva or urine drug tests and hence, there is lack of new innovations in sweat drug testing kits. These kits are also more expensive. Only a few drugs can be detected using sweat drug testing.
Pros And Cons Of Drug Testing
1.Do give every employee a copy of your Drug & Alcohol Policy and make certain you have a signed receipt in their employee file. You always want proof that they received and agreed to read your company's policy.

2.Do include in your Drug and Alcohol policy that you can Drug Test your employees for any reason. Specifying that you can Drug Test them at any time for any reason gives you latitude for Drug Testing any employee.

3.Do document any incident involving drug or alcohol misconduct at your company. If the incident isn't documented in writing it is the same as never been committed. Documentation will become very important in the grounds for dismissal or unemployment claims.

4.Do make sure that the company you select to perform your Drug Testing uses a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration () certified Drug Testing laboratory. They set the standards and guidelines for Drug Testing laboratories. They provide a list of Drug Testing labs on their website.

5.Do know whether your company is required to be in a drug free workplace program.

6.Do know whether the company you hired to do your is trained under 49 CFR Part ?40. A trained collector will make all the difference when minimizing potential errors in the drug testing process. Ask the facility for a list of certificates for each of their collectors stating they have completed the required training.

7.Do have your supervisors attend drug and alcohol recognition training. Unless the employee's suspected behavior is blatantly noticeable; you will do not know what to look for.

8.Do have your employees on a time limit regarding how long they will be the Drug Testing facility. Require the employee to arrive at the Drug Testing site within a reasonable amount time.

The Don'ts of Employee Drug Testing

1.Don't ever Drug Test your employees without a company Drug & Alcohol Policy in place that clearly states you will test your employees for drugs. You must have a document in place that outlines your policy on the use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

2.Don't create a Drug & Alcohol Policy without checking your state and local laws regarding Employee Drug Testing. Assume that each and every State has written its own state law on this matter. You can go onto the United States Department of Labor () website to obtain the Drug Testing laws in your own state.

3.Don't ever allow an employee drive himself or herself to the Drug Testing facility if you suspect they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You could be responsible if that employee is in an accident on the way to the Drug Testing facility. Have a supervisor drive them to and from the Drug Testing facility.

4.Don't ever allow an employee out of your immediate site if you suspect they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They will give you any excuse to find a way out of the Drug Testing. Make they are accompanied all the way to the Drug Testing facility.

5.Don't ignore a drug or alcohol problem if you identify one. It is only going to get worse, not better. Remember, the safety of other employees is at risk if a problem such as this is not resolved and your company might be held liable.

6.Don't wait until you have a problem with drugs in the workplace to act. A good company Drug & Alcohol Policy and pre-employment Drug Testing are a good way to stop that problem before it begins.

7.Don't wait more than 2 hours to Drug Test an employee if they are under the influence of drugs or for every beverage containing alcohol.

8.Don't take another employee's word that another employee is under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on the necessary job. Investigate the allegations for yourself, then document it and then accompany the individual to the Drug Testing facility if you deem it.
