Blogging - do you own your own blog? If not you can set one up today for no money at all by using www.blogger.com or www.wordpress.com and start getting links to your site. Some of those links will generate their own traffic, so the trick is to get the word out about your post. What do you do is write a post with keywords related to your topic or niche, and then use the ping services to get the word out. Try using www.pingomatic.com and www.pingoat.com that will send your link out to lots of blog directories and sites. Traffic will grow the more you do it.
Forum posting - there is a forum for every subject I can think of and you can mostly join for free. Search for them on Google by typing in your keyword plus the word forum. You shouldn't promote your products or services in the forum post but focus on writing great posts and offer help and advice. You then do your selling bit in your forum signature. This can often bring a boost in traffic in a day - but make sure you stick to the threads that are busy with lots of people looking.
Write some articles - article writing is one of my favourite ways to generate traffic. You can get longer term traffic but usually a flurry when the article is accepted. Try not to send the same article out each time to the different directories, rewrite them to make them unique. Some will fail, some will be average and some will be superb, so it is a case of not relying on just the one article.
Use Digg - place a snippet of your story or news item on Digg and they list it on their high traffic site within a few hours, often quicker - a great way to get exposure and longer term build your links and longer term traffic.
Email your list - you should have your own list as they know you, trust you and hopefully will listen to you and look at what you have to say. I know some people that have lists of over 60,000. When you have built this up it is easy to get traffic to your offer whenever you want - just don't email them too often.
Engage in a joint Venture - you can't always do it in one day, although with the right contacts you can. If you receive a newsletter from another website in your area of expertise then why not see if you can offer something of interest to them and their readers. Free reports are good or something where the list owner can make a commission on any sales. A good tip is to make sure you collect email addresses as well to build your own list at the same time.
Purchase Web Site Traffic
One of the most valuable things you can do is to have an affiliate program for your web site (this is assuming you actually have a product you have created, and are selling). If you don't have a product, put some serious thought into developing one. An affiliate program can drive massive traffic to your site in no time flat.
Let's say you have a product you have created and are selling on your website for $97 (In this example the product will be an e-Book).
Visitors arriving on your site, pay $97, and can then download the e-Book. Your profit is $97 less any payment processing fees (credit card, etc).
With an affiliate program, you pay a commission for every sale of your product or service that is made by a referral of your affiliate. You pay for results only, no sales means no payment.
This means you are getting someone else to market and promote your web site for free!
What does this mean? More traffic of course as more visitors are sent to you by the affiliate.
It's highly likely that a large portion of the visitors may never have found your web site, so in many ways these sales could be thought of as bonus sales, above and beyond those you would ordinarily have mode.
The downside is you need to share a percentage of the sale with the affiliate but you should also remember that it is quite possible the customer will buy more from you in the future.
This is the power of affiliate programs and affiliate marketing in general. Not having an affiliate program is an area where lots of marketers fall down.
Assuming you have an opt-in in place, then not only have you made a sale, but you now have a customer you can promote more products to in the future! One of Marketing 101's golden rule is that it's far, far easier to sell to an existing customer than to a brand new one. After all they loved your product enough to buy it, right? You have established a relationship with them at this point, and provided that your product has great relevant content they will be hooked!
The other thing to keep in mind is that it's likely that you will have a higher percentage of sales from your affiliates visitors because (hopefully) the affiliate has already pre-sold his customers on your fantastic product. More than likely the affiliate has built up a solid reputation from his customers (who more than likely have purchased from him in the past) and because he has recommended your product, they come to your website already pre-sold that your product is a decent and worthy one, and at this point you have a visitor who already trusts and believes in your product because of the relationship they have with the affiliate recommending your products.
You need to think beyond the commission you are paying the affiliate and look instead at the long term relationship you have the potential to build with your new customer.
Make sure you look at using affiliate programs to maximize web site traffic. Payment is only required if the visitor purchases an item, so you have no upfront costs.
