Questions To Ask Doctor About Cancer

    View:
To help you cope better with a diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer and treatment of mesothelioma, you need to have honest, open discussions with your doctor. You should feel free to ask any question that's on your mind no matter how small it might seem. Here are some questions you might want to ask. Nurses, social workers, and other members of the treatment team may also be able to answer many of your questions.

* What kind of mesothelioma do I have'is it the lung type{pleural mesothelioma}, the abdominal type{peritoneal mesothelioma} or the heart type{pericardial mesothelioma}?

* Has my cancer spread beyond the primary site'if so what other organs of my body have been affected?

* What is the stage (extent) of my cancer, and what does that mean in my case?how does the stage affects the likely outcome of the disease?how will it determine the mode of treatment i will likely get?

* Is my cancer likely to be resectable?that is can still be considered for surgery?

* Are there other tests that need to be done before we can decide on treatment?what tests do we need to do to properly define the extent of the disease so that we can decide on the appropriate mode of treatment? what are the type of tests i will need to do?

* How much experience do you have treating this type of cancer?have you treated this type of cancer before?how many similar cases have you handled and what was the outcome?

* Should I get a second opinion?

* What treatment options do I have?can i pursue some other non conventional treatment options?can i participate in clinical trials of new drugs? if so what are the clinical trials available for me today?

* What is the goal of treatment'is it curative or just to reduce the symptoms i am experiencing{palliative}?how effective is this mode of treatment?

* What do you recommend and why?what are my chances with this type of treatment?

* What risks or side effects are there to the treatments you suggest?how best should i cope with these side effects?how effective is this mode of treatment?

* What should I do to be ready for treatment?

* How long will treatment last? What will it involve? Where will it be done?will the treatment involve more than one mode of treatment?

* How will treatment affect my daily activities?will it make me too weak to do any work?

* What would we do if the treatment doesn't work or if the cancer recurs?

* What type of follow-up might I need after treatment?

In addition to these sample questions, be sure to write down some of your own. For instance, you might want more information about recovery times. Or you may want to ask about clinical trials for which you may qualify.
Questions To Ask Doctor About Cancer
You had trouble concentrating, your work and social life was suffering and you couldn't keep it together long enough to hold on to regular a job for long.

One day, while surfing the web, you read an article on the Internet about adult attention deficit disorder, otherwise known as ADD and wondered if you had it.

You got checked out by prominent psychologist who specialized in adult and sure enough, you are suffering from the disorder.

The revelation is bitter sweet. On the one hand you now know what has been happening to you. On the other, you now have more questions than ever before.

This is normal, in fact, the next time you see your doctor, you should bring a list of questions with you that can put ADD in its proper perspective.

The list below is far from comprehensive, but is the fundamental questions hat one may ask to learn about more about living with this condition. Feel free to add a few questions of your own.

What causes ADD?

Even within the medical profession there is some debate as to the actual causes of ADD in children and adults. Some say that the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine is the culprit. This particular brain chemical control the cognitive functions of the brain and can greatly affect awareness, judgment memory and the ability to concentrate on tasks. Also, dopamine, another essential chemical, is very low in individuals with ADD. The fact that nearly 60 percent of ADD suffers have low dopamine count is very significant.

Indeed no one can argue with these facts.

Where the arguments come in is the how and why of these issues.

Some say it is a diet and nutrition problem, in fact, some studies have shown that the eradication of certain foods, like sugars, and refined and processed foods, decrease certain symptoms of ADD. Certain vitamins and minerals can also help stabilize symptoms.

This begs the question of whether or not the chemical imbalance that triggers ADD began with a nutrition deficiency. Another argument is that there are structural differences in the brains make up that can cause ADD. In a small percentage of ADD victims, the forebrain, or he part that control our thought emotional and behavior are smaller than normal. This could influence certain behaviors causing not only the chemical imbalances but he problems that regularly manifest in the lives of people with ADD.

What ADD treatments are right for me?

The answer to this question will largely depend on the individual. For instance smokers will have to stay way from certain medications that may not be prescribed for fear of health risks.

ADD suffers who manifest symptoms of clinical depression may be given Prozac. Stimulants like Ritalin Adderall or Strattera can also be prescribed, but not for people with a history of drug or alcohol abuse, as these items are highly addictive.

As stated earlier, diet and nutrition can play a major role in combating symptoms, so if are really serious about getting the ADD/ADHD monkey off of your back you may want to modify your dietary habits.

Can I control ADD?

The answer is yes and no. Will you ever be able to truly suppress it? No. ADD/ADHD is a constant condition and the battle is fought on a daily basis.

That said, you can mitigate symptoms with a combinations of medication and behavior modification. Also, seeing a therapist may also help you not only lessen he symptoms of ADD and ADHD but can perhaps aid you in putting the disorder in perspective.

Being diagnosed with doesn't have to be the end of the world. You are now armed with the knowledge and know the enemy you have to defeat. With the right impetus and tools at your side, you can embark on a healthier lifestyle with new goals and a brighter future, in spite of your ADD diagnosis.
