The Republic of Latvia is a country in Northern Europe. Latvia has land borders with its two fellow Baltic States Estonia to the north and Lithuania to the south and Russia and Belarus to the east. In the west Latvia shares a maritime border with Sweden. The capital of Latvia, Riga is the largest city in the Baltic States.



Riga is the capital of the Republic of Latvia and the geographical centre of the Baltic States. The cities cross roads location between Western Europe and huge Eastern markets has always been and still is one of Rigas attractions for business activities. The name of Riga is known across Europe.

Riga is not only the backbone of Latvias economy but also the largest centre of education and science. This is confirmed by a large number of cultural events, international exhibitions, scientific conferences and seminars that every year takes place in Riga.

The Doma Cathedral considered the largest church in the Baltic States. Built in the 13th century, it was modified several times in its history. It has a magnificent organ that dates from 1844.

The city is divided by the River Daugava and features a beautifully preserved historic old town along the banks of the river.

Located on eastern shore of the Baltic Sea Latvia lies in East European Plain. It consists of fertile, low lying plains, largely covered by forest, mostly pines and the highest point being the Gaizinkalns at 3116m.

Common species of wildlife in Latvia include deer, wild boar, fox, beaver and wolves.

The Latvian climate is humid, continental and temperate in nature, with temperatures varying.
