If you are thinking of getting a pet for companionship, you have to undertake a lot of consideration. There are many things and many responsibilities that come with owning a pet. Whatever it is that you choose, a bird, a fish, a cat or a dog, the pet will need more than just food and shelter from you. It's going to need care and love as well.
So how do you start?
If you are someone who just want to keep a pet to give you companionship then a dog might be a good idea. Dogs are compassionate and loving and you just might fall in love with the hundreds of cute breeds out there. But if you're looking for something that needs a little less maintenance, perhaps you are busy most of the time, there are other options out there who are less rambunctious than dogs. A cat, perhaps, or a fish, might be a better choice for you.
If you've made up your mind on what kind of pet you're looking for, you need to get started on thinking about the things that your pet will need. You might want to include a small percentage in your budget for some pet food, or a small space in your home for a little bed. You might also want to devote a little of your schedule to make sure that walking the dog on a daily basis is part of it.
Your choice of food is also important. You wouldn't want to feed your rabbit pieces of beef now, would you? Of course, this also comes down to the kind of pet that you have. Sometimes, older pets will need more energy than younger ones so increasing the amount of food you give is a must.
Owning a pet is like having a very small child. They will depend on you for some of their basic needs but they will also need something that you have to provide first hand, and that is love and a genuine passion for taking good care of your pet.
Right Pet For You
There are many things to consider when you are getting ready to purchase a pet for your family, and most people have and idea of what type of animal they would like to purchase. No matter what type of pet your are looking to purchase there are several things that you need to consider before you make your final pet selection.
Some pet require more attention and help than others, for instance cats do not require as much assistance as dogs do. Dogs tend to become very attached to their owners and require lots of attention and if they do not get it they have been known to tear up rooms of the house. Dogs are easily bored, and they need the human interaction. Most dog owners need to take their dogs for a long walk in the mornings and evening times, so that they can have time to play with their companion and also to be sure that it gets the exercise it needs. Cats are like the cruise control of animals, all you need to do is put your belongings up high and have plenty of toys for them to play with and they can take care of the rest much like a fish cats require very little attention.
It is very important that you care for your pet, and spend time with them. Your pets want and even long for interaction with you, so if you are going to invest in buying a pet you need to also plan on investing time to spend and play with the pet every day. Most professionals say that pet require a minimum of 15 minutes a day of playtime, but I say 30 minutes to a hour.
I know that dogs require more attention, and they are harder to care for than other animals, but they are also some of the most loyal and fun animals. Besides that they are extremely intelligent and can help let you know when there is an intruder and can also be trained to do many tricks that will bring a smile to your face.
The amount of care you will be able to provide for you pet should be the most important factor when selecting a pet for your home. So, when you are out at the store be sure to factor in the amount of time and effort the pet you are getting ready to purchase is going require from your and your family and from that make your decision.
