The true roots of the band date back to 1969, when aspiring singer and guitarist John Hartman moved to California with the hope of meeting Skip Spence of Jefferson Airplane fame. As it turned out, Spence wound up introducing Hartman to Tom Johnston, another local Northern California musician. Hartman and Johnston hit it off based on their common musical interests, and the two began to jam together.

After a few months of jamming, the duo added two more members to their group, and after existing for a time with the name “Pud," the band decided they needed a better moniker. As a result, they renamed themselves the Doobie Brothers in 1970, and a new band was born.

Their live shows remain their lifeblood, as the band has been known to veer off the musical charts and extemporaneously jam on a song for up to 30 minutes at a time.
