Safari To Kenya - Top 6 Attractions At The Kenyan Coast

    View:
The coast of Kenya boasts of a wide array of exciting activities and tourist sites. The regions of Watamu and Malindi offer activities such as water sports, game safaris, excursions to the pristine sandy beaches or even snake safaris.

Safaris for travelers can be arranged from Mombasa Or Malindi towns. Malindi is just a two hour drive away from its nearest wildlife park. Parks found in Kenya offer safaris that will forever remain imprinted in your mind. A host of other activities are offered-

Going on Kitesurfing

Kite surfing is coordinated from the Che Shale, in Watamu. The pristine beach provides very conducive conditions for kite surfing both professional riders and beginners alike. The Che Shale hotel provides an array of courses taught by professional instructors, state of the art equipment, rescue boats and everything else needed to learn safely.

Indian Ocean Surfing

The number one spot on the Kenyan coast for surfing is Malindi. The outer reefs experience huge swell continually, but the swells become even larger especially during the months of June through August due to seasonal monsoon winds. Surfers are advised to bring along their boards and wax.

Snorkeling and Scuba

The north coast of Kenya is home to top notch diving sites. Diving could be conducted all year round though visibility lessens especially over July and August due to the high seas and silting. The Watamu Marine National park hosts one of the best dive sites. It begins as a shallow coral garden that is superb for learners and opens up to magnificent outer reefs. Sharks, whales and a host of other sea animals are sighted on the outer reefs of the Kenyan coast.

The Amazing Gede Ruins

This is a 13th century relic that was abandoned in the 17th century. The history of why the inhabitants of Gede abandoned it is not exactly known though historians claim that the town was raided and destroyed by unidentified invaders in the 17th century. These ruins are characterized by nature trails which dominate the outer and inner walls comprising of deciduous trees. A small museum showcases ancient Arabic, Chinese and Phoenician porcelain that was excavated from the ruins.

The Creek at Mida

Mida Creek is located south of Malindi along the Mombasa-Malindi road. The creek covers around 32 square kilometers and is composed of extensive mudflats and mangrove forests that attract a wide variety of flora and fauna. Along the sheltered creeks and estuaries can be seen many species of mangroves, among them the Rhizophora mucronata, Avicenia Marina and Ceriops tagal among others. Along the margins of the mangrove forests on Sudi Island, the Pied Kingfisher, the Little Egret, the Osprey and the African Fish Eagle abound. In the mudflats abound the Yellow-billed Storks, the grey and Black-headed herons and the Woolly-necked Storks. Along the sandy areas are the Ghost crabs, Money crabs and the Fiddler crabs.

Snake Safari Hunt

In December 2007, the world largest spitting cobra Naja ashei was found, and named after the late James Ashe, a prominent herpetologist and founder of Bio-ken. The Bio-ken Snake Farm is located about 2 kilometers north of Watamu and is internationally known for having the biggest collection of snakes in Africa, and almost half of the total number of species in Kenya.

Naja ashei is a brown cobra which spits and a common reptile in the lowlands of Kenya. They are found in large numbers especially around the southern region of Tsavo East and Galana. This area is a favorite for snake lovers.

You may also visit the African Snake Farm off Mombasa-Malindi road just after Malindi Airport. Other snake farms worth visiting include the snake and crocodile farm near Malindi Marine Park and the Francis Ngombo Snake Farm near Gede.

The Undiscovered Arabuko-Sokoke Forest

This forest is a reserve located near Watamu where a number of rare endemic species of birds and animals live, including the Sokoke Owl, the Sokoke Cat and the Golden Rumped Elephant Shrew. There are guides and walking trails and it is a beautiful place for nature lovers and a birdwatchers paradise.

Malindi and Watamu are wonderful destinations to visit. Make them your travel destination.
