Salt water fish tanks can make wonderful additions to your home or office, and the exotic salt water fish make wonderful pets that can fit very nicely into your hectic schedule. There is a fair amount of care and maintenance required to sustain this tropical environment within the confines of the aquarium, however, and an ongoing investment as well. With so many wildly colorful and lively saltwater fish on sale, it is easy to see why it is worthwhile.

People enjoy salt water fish because they are beautiful to watch, add a unique focal point to any room, and studies have even shown that being in a room and watching the fish swimming is soothing to the nervous system. In order to sustain this wondrous environment, you will need to do more than feed the fish every day, though. You will also have to check water temperatures and nitrate levels etc in the water using your test kit and test the water quality on a regular basis. Once every week or two you will have to clean the tank to prevent contamination as well.

There are affordable saltwater fish that you can start with, and once you get the hang of things and start investing in some more complex species you will probably feel an immense satisfaction knowing that you are successfully parenting these tropical pets. Exotic salt water fish are very colorful and some amazing results can be achieved by adding different fish to your tank, as well as natural rocks, live coral and real or artificial plants. Be careful when adding anything new, though, because saltwater fish tend to be much more expensive than regular fish and if you combine fish that are incompatible you could see your investment go down the drain.

For the novice it may be worthwhile to starting with the more affordable salt water fish, at least until you know exactly what you are doing and have figures out how to maintain your aquarium correctly.
