Jerry Yang and David Filo were graduate students at Stanford University in January of 1994 when they created a website that they called "Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web," a directory that organized other web sites into a hierarchy. Four months later Yang and Filo renamed the search engine Yahoo! after a word used by Jonathan Swift in Gulliver's Travels. Swift's definition of Yahoo! was "rude, unsophisticated, uncouth."



At the end of 1994, approximately twelve months after its creation, Yang and Filo had over one million hits on their fledgling search engine. Understanding that they had designed something that could enjoy potential business success Filo and Yang incorporated Yahoo! early in March of 1995, fourteen months after its inception. Because the name Yahoo was already the brand name of other enterprises, human propelled watercraft, barbecue sauce, and knives, Yang and Filo were forced to add the exclamation point in order to trademark the name. Yahoo! had it first public offering on April 12, 1996. Two point six million shares of Yahoo! were sold at thirteen dollars a piece, earning a total of thirty-three point eight million dollars.

By the late 1990's Yahoo! and several other internet communications company's diversified into web portals.

In the late 1990's Yahoo! also started buying out other companies such as eGroups and GeoCities. Because Yahoo! had a reputation for changing terms of service when purchasing companies most of the buy outs were wrought with controversy.

Although it stocks fell to an all time lo, Yahoo! was able to survive the dot.com bubble burst. In order to help rebuild itself, Yahoo! started forming partnerships with telecommunication companies and internet providers, these alliances led to the creation of content rich broadband services that actively competed with AOL.

With their eye on the future, the powers in charge at Yahoo! are working on creating Yahoo!Next, a concept similar to Google Labs that contains forums that provide places for Yahoo! users to leave feedback that will hopefully assist in the development of future Yahoo! enterprises and technologies.

Like most successful companies Yahoo! is constantly working to improve and expand. Yahoo! currently provides its customers with a smorgasbord of internet services that cater o most online activities. These services include Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Groups, Yahoo! Maps and Driving Directions, and Yahoo! Messenger. While Google holds the top spot in search engines Yahoo! is standing strong in second place. Yahoo! competes against Yahoo! by offering its customers vertical search services such as, Yahoo! Image, Yahoo! Local, Yahoo! Shopping Search, Yahoo! Video, and Yahoo! News. Yahoo! is proud to boast the largest, most successful e-mail service in the world.

User generated content products such as Yahoo! Personals, Yahoo! Photos, Yahoo! 360, and Flicker offer Yahoo!'s customer's social networking services.

Yahoo! Shopping, Yahoo! Merchant Solutions, Yahoo! Store, Yahoo! Web Hosting, Yahoo! Domains, and Yahoo! Business Email are services Yahoo! provides to small business owners that allows them to develop their own online business using Yahoo!'s tools.

In March of 2004 Yahoo! launched a paid inclusion program that guaranteed commercial websites listings on Yahoo! search engines for a fee. While the paid inclusions were lucrative for Yahoo!, they where unpopular with the online marketing world. Business owners didn't want to pay the internet mogul for search engine optimization. Paid inclusion simply guaranteed that the businesses websites would be ranked; it didn't guarantee that it would be ranked in the first two pages.

Establishing your own E-commerce site isn't like what it used to be. There are thousands of competition that is all too ready to get a bigger share of the pie. Every scheme and method you can find to augment your sales would be extraordinarily beneficial.

We have got to confess to ourselves. Most of us are into it for the cash. We're not going to waste our time just for the fun of it. Many sites would not wait till hell freezes over solely to see their profits. Whilst there are some who takes things gently there are always people who would rather see profit any given day.

It is commonly accepted that without traffic we have any business. Like any business, without any purchasers you do not get sales. Traffic represents all the people that gets an opportunity to see what you have to offer. The more people who see your products the more folk there would be to buy them.

Nobody puts up an E-commerce site that doesn't expect profit. We have a seed capital that should be regained. With a consistent traffic, we at least have a reasonable chance to reach that chance. Monetizing your traffic would optimize your chances of making the best out of it.

Making Money out of your Traffic

The best and most proved methodology of earning a return out of your traffic is using advertising. The web generates hundreds of thousands upon hundred of thousands of traffic everyday. Most of them are just looking for something. While some are just looking % that there is also a good percentage that is trying to find something that they need.

The internet has proven to be a particularly trustworthy source in finding what was reckoned to be a very unsearchable product. The web has made the world a smaller place; you can advertise a product from the depths of Istanbul and still find a buyer from the center of Philadelphia.

Generating traffic is not an easy task. You must say with a great number of sites to generate a good number of traffic flow. But if done successfully this could open up a Pandora's Box of chances. One of the advantages is monetizing your traffic flow.

So, to get to the center of it the more traffic you generate the more probable you are thought to be as a fascinating, fascinating, in a way that a good traffic flowing site is simply convertible to profit. Essentially traffic equals profit. Advertising is the name of the game ; with the good advertising scheme you may use your traffic flow to your advantage.

When you have good traffic you've a good number of potential customers, customers that are ready to pour money into your coffers. Aside from that these are also traffic that may be redirected to sponsored links that are prepared to pay you for a large portion of the traffic that you have generated.

This scheme is called "pay-per-click". With every click a visitor of your site makes on an advertised link you will be paid. The more traffic you generate and the more clicks that happens would spell to more profits.

Affiliate Programs

Another methodology of monetizing your traffic are affiliate marketing programmes. You can link up with other established sites and online corporations and monetize your traffic by having a percentage of sales generated by traffic coming from your site.

The basic idea is, traffic generated from your internet site will go to another site that will provide a product that you do not carry. Many programs can keep track and make records of transactions that was made feasible due to site linkage.

When purchases are manufactured by buyers that was controlled by your site to their site you get a proportion of that sale. Affiliate marketing programs would give you the advantage of monetizing your traffic without the actual need of carrying or promoting a certain product.

There are so many ways and methods to monetize your traffic. All it takes is a bit of tough work and the desire to successfully launch a profit-earning site. The internet is a veritable source of information, many tips and guides are offered everywhere in how to monetize your traffic and make your site a good profit earner.
