Onyx is considered a semi-precious gemstone that has a variety of stripes of bloodstones or chalcedony in it. It is, indeed, a form of quartz that has a finely crystalline texture but its crystalline structure is very thin and it can only be seen by using polarized light. Except purple, blue and black, the stripes in onyx are found in almost every color. In a kind of onyx known as sardonyx the stripes are found in red shade instead of black.
