Americans are finding the cost of health insurance increasing, so that the need for affordable health care is on the rise. Companies are using rising premiums and tighter financial budgets to reduce the level of health care available to their employees. It wasn't that long ago that I had a fantastic health plan but all that has changed. Last fall, out of the blue, we were informed that our health care provider was going to be switched to a cheaper alternative.
The company was seeking a more cost effective plan that would benefit all of its employees. I suppose some people are better off and perhaps I shouldn't sound ungrateful. It's not that I'm against other workers getting a good deal but they are now taking twice the amount out of my salary so that my husband and daughter are covered. Other than a few exceptions, everyone else seems to benefit from this new arrangement but because I haven't had a raise but I am taking a great deal less home so my family can have health cover.
My health care may still be very good despite the fact that the old company was much better than this new one. An affordable health care provider may have been the excuse for the change but the only result some of us have seen is higher out of pocket expenses and co-pays, not to mention reduced paychecks.
I am sure of this because just over 2 years ago when I had my little boy, the stay in hospital was completely covered by my insurance policy. Working out that same stay with the new plan would mean approximately 4,000 dollars would have to be paid by me.
There are also the co-pays to consider, another cost in addition to the hospital fees I would have to pay. Luckily there are more and more affordable health care programs being created to help those that do not have any coverage. Single mothers, families working for companies that don't offer coverage, low-income households - they are all able to get low cost or even free health care. The problem is when a small number of people take advantage of a system that was designed for those that needed it most.
For many people desperately trying to improve their situation these affordable health care plans are a life-line but to others they are just an easy option. Taxpayers, such as me, are contributing to the vast number of programs currently available. My employer definitely found advantages in finding a lower cost health plan provider for their employees! However, their money saving technique wasn't good news to employees because suddenly we were making up for their cost cutting endeavor - by seeing less money in our paychecks. Something needs to be done in this country to offset rising costs and provide more affordable health care to those who are in need.
Senior Supplemental Health Insurance
When an adult reaches their 50s and 60s in age, sometimes they can have a hard time trying to get health insurance in Texas. This is because health insurance carriers are scared that they will be paying lots of claims from this age group. They will seriously look at how old they are and the status of their health before they decide whether or not to give them a policy.
Of course, it isn't impossible for older adults to get health insurance in Texas. A person age 65 or older who has worked for ten years, or is married to someone who has worked for that length of time might be able to qualify for Medicare through the government. Medicare will cover most, but not necessarily all of a person's health care needs and they may still need some additional coverage.
Qualifying for Medicare can be fast tracked for anyone who is qualified and needs care if they are seriously ill or disabled. This is especially true for anyone who has received Social Security benefits for two years or more. And, even if you, as an individual do not meet the requirements for Medicare, you may still qualify if you are married to someone who is eligible. So, as you see, there are multiple routes older adults can take to get helath insurance in Texas.
With Medicare, they will pay a huge part of the costs for your health care. There is also what is called a "Medicare Supplement" that is used when Medicare doesn't pick up all of the costs. This supplement is used for the remaining balance. The catch is with this health care insurance in Texas, you must apply for the supplement portion within the open enrollment period. This period lasts about six months. Anytime during those six months you can apply. It's better to apply sooner than later. The sooner you do, the better chance you have of getting your supplement faster.
If you wait until after the open enrollment period is over, you may not get all of your health coverage paid for. Of course, it's not a given that you would need the supplement. It just depends on your situation. In addition to that, there are other health insurance supplements in Texas that can be used. If you have health insurance from a retirement package, then that can be used to pay for the remaining portion.
As with many government programs, the paperwork for Medicare is complex and can be difficult to understand, particularly for older people or the disabled. These individuals can find assistance through the Texas Health and Human Services department. The agency's Web site also offers a wealth of information for anyone needing Medicare as their health insurance provider in Texas including eligibility requirements and necessary forms.
When using Medicare health insurance in Texas, there are some limits for prescription drug coverage. This is important information to know about your Medicare benefits so you can be sure to apply for supplemental coverage if you need it to get the medicines you need to stay alive. Finding the appropriate health insurance in Texas is more challenging for older adults, but it is also more vital so it is important to get as much information as possible and weigh out all of your options carefully in order to protect your health and keep medical problems from bankrupting you during your retirement years.
