Shed Construction For The Novice Handyman

    View:
Are you finding it hard to store your gardening equipment or do you need a workplace for your tools and handyman equipment? A shed could be just the thing you need to stash your stuff and do your handy work. While you could pay someone to make one for you, building a shed is not as difficult as it may seem. Here are some reasons and tips for building your own shed.

Building a shed is much different than most other do-it-yourself home projects. If you want to add a fireplace or build a wall, it will affect the layout of the house so you have to worry about getting the design perfect and matching the style of the house. Making a shed, on the other hand, is not attached to the house so the design doesn't have to be perfect. It's meant to be utilitarian so it doesn't have to be aesthetically appealing (though it can be) and even if you make a few mistakes it won't matter as much. The important thing is that it will stand up to the elements and provide shelter for your belongings or workplace.

A shed can be the perfect project for learning how to construct a structure with a frame with doors and supports. You can even add a window to practice those skills. You won't have to worry about insulating it and you don't even need to put drywall on it (unless you want to).

Before you start construction on your shed you'll need to determine how big your shed should be. If you have plenty of space in your backyard then it's usually wise to build bigger than you think you'll need since you'll surely need more space in the future. If, on the other hand you have limited space then don't make your shed too big as it will clutter your yard and bring down the value of your home.

If you're having a problem determining the size of your shed, figure out what you want to store in your shed and how big of a workspace you'll need. Lay out your tools and don't forget that most of the hand tools can be hung on the wall. If you have bikes, consider installing racks on the wall or from the ceiling to save space.

If building a shed from scratch sounds like a project that is too daunting then consider purchasing a prefabricated shed. These can be completely pre-made or you can find ones that allow for some customization. They are usually made out of metal, wood or a combination of both. The only drawback is that the size and shape of the shed may not be exactly what you want.

Building a shed is a project that you can complete and learn from. It won't affect the design of your house so it doesn't have to be perfect. There's nothing stopping you.
