Sleep Related Eating Disorder

    View:
People can do strange things when asleep, as comedic portrays of sleepwalking individuals has shown. Sleepwalking has been a known problem with some people for years, but can a person do other activities while asleep? A disorder recognized only in recent years, nocturnal sleep related eating disorder is one example of just how much a person can do when the subconscious mind takes over at night. If you fear that you are suffering from nocturnal sleep related eating disorder, there are some symptoms that you and your family can look for, and treatments that you can seek.

Symptoms

Given that both can involve activity while asleep, nocturnal sleep related eating disorder is related to sleepwalking. However, while in sleepwalking, simple motion is the basis, those suffering from nocturnal sleep related eating disorder tend to head right for food, which generally means going to the kitchen. Sufferers will eat while still asleep or only partially awake, and often cannot remember their episodes of sleep-eating.

Often, the foods are consumed are high in fat and calories or involve strange combination of foods, and seems to be linked to those who are dieting or depressed, causing binges when the subconscious mind is in control. If you suffer from nocturnal sleep related eating disorder, you may wake up with food in the kitchen, with a stomachache from overeating, and may suffer from a loss of appetite in the mornings.

Solutions

Treatment of nocturnal sleep related eating disorder isn't always easy, but tends to start with a trip to a sleep disorder center so you can be studied while asleep. Based on the results of these studies, doctors may provide a course of treatment to stop further episodes of nocturnal sleep related eating disorder. Often this will not include sleeping pills, as a person may continue to have episodes under sedation. In addition, sometimes occurrences of nocturnal sleep related eating disorder are linked to other compulsions, including drug and alcohol addiction, so introducing sedatives that can cause dependency will often worsen the problem.

There seems to be a big link to stress and nocturnal sleep related eating disorder, so your doctor may prescribe classes for reducing stress or anxiety. If you worry that you may be suffering from nocturnal sleep related eating disorder, your best bet to improving the situation for yourself is to avoid intake of alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, or any other drugs, to review your diet to ensure that it is not being too restrictive during the day, and to arrange for study at a sleep center. With a little research and work, you'll soon be sleeping as you should be.

Fad diets why are they bad are because this type of dieting can lead to depression and possibly an eating disorder. Most women and some men have tried at least one fad diet or another. It all stems with a dislike of our bodies and for some, a dislike of themselves. Some people who want to lose weight will go to any lengths, because they hate their body so much and it causes them so much pain. These are emotions of depression. Anyone who restricts his or her caloric intake to the level of starvation in a fad diet, well that is disordered eating. If someone is always dieting to lose weight, something is wrong.

Why do we diet? Because we do not like the way we look. Proper healthy dieting for most people is normal, even for teenagers. Fad diets why they are bad is because they do not provide or promote normal dieting. People who constantly obsess about their weight, try diet after diet, may be susceptible not only to depression, but to an eating disorder as well. Teens who rigidly diet have an 18% more risk of developing an eating disorder. Fad dieters regain 95% of their weight loss and more within two years.

Fad diets why they are bad is because they have so many dietary deficiencies such as B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C and tryptophan. All these deficiencies have been linked to depression. Extreme dieting causes low iron, which means low hemoglobin, which causes fatigue. Hemoglobin provides oxygen for body tissues to function. Women who diet more than five times a year are more likely to experience depression.

Eating disorders are not that uncommon. There are three clinical types: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. They are still more common in women than men, probably since our society places more importance on the appearance of women then men. Eating disorders are not just about appearance. They are closely related to low self-esteem and depression. Reconvey from your eating disorder could be a cure for your depression.

Eating disorders are underestimated. Many women dieters have symptoms, but them may not be severe enough to be clinical. Fad diets why are they bad is because they put your body and mind at risk to short term illness and serious chronic illness. Obesity carries its own health risks. People need to be at a weight that is optimal for their size and age. There is a reason why many diet ads say to check with your physician before beginning a weight loss program.

There are diets that are supposed to be your depression cure. They mostly concentrate on eating smart, watching your caffeine and sugar intake, and drinking lot of water. What you eat does affect the serotonin levels in your brain (the neurotransmitter depleted in depression). Most of these diets for depression just promote the eating of a well balanced meal and exercise. A few suggest supplements, which are precisely the ones that have been found to be lacking in fad dieting.

Anyone with depression should see a physician. For clinical depression, medication and counseling may be needed. For others, the cure for your depression and disordered eating may be to accept your body, eat a healthy balanced meal and exercise regularly.
