You will find that majority of the modern homes have a limited bathroom space. Homeowners in such a scenario usually accommodate within that limited space, as they do not have any other option. Thus, it is a fact that the small bathroom designs, which make the best use of the space that is available, are now most in demand by the homeowners.
The following guidelines on small bathroom designs are conveniently applicable in case you are designing a bathroom for your new apartment or renovating your old bathroom.
- The small bathrooms look best with the small and deep bathtubs.
- The wall-mounted or pedestal sinks, basins and the small sized baths are simply made for each other, as they hardly occupy much floor space.
- In case, you prefer a shower stall, it is best to use clear shower screens for the enclosure. The best part of this is you will be able to save enough space and make way for enough light, which is unlike the framed opaque shower walls.
- You can have recessed and floating cabinets in your bathroom; this should make ample space.
- The small bathroom designs usually come with enough storage space for you to be able to stash away lots of clutter. Therefore, ensure that your bathroom has enough storage shelves and cabinets.
- Place the windows near the ceiling; this way, there will be enough wall space for you to include some storage cabinets beneath it.
- You would be clever enough to position the toilet in an alcove, by making use of the wall-space above for fix opening the shelves.
- When it comes to doors, most of the people are going for the sliding doors, which can be easily slid into the in-wall cavities. If you are opting for the hinged door, you can get the towel-rack installed on the door itself.
The homeowners need to abide by certain design - as well as dimension-parameters when planning the small bathroom designs, which depend on the area/zone. You can also try out a few optical illusion tricks for creating a space illusion.
Color can create Great Illusion
Yes! Sophisticated hues can create stupendous illusion for space in your so-called very small sized bathroom. Softer and lighter tones, such as neutrals, pastel shades and whites are the best options. These colors create a feeling of largeness and reflect maximum light. Remember, that gaudy designs and loud colors clog the space and makes your bathroom look very congested. If you want to opt for wallpapers, then go for simple designs.
Light and Mirrors Can Work Wonders
To create the impression of largeness, make maximum use of lights and mirrors. Natural light is the best way to give a spacious look to your bathroom. For the purpose, add skylight and enough windows. As far as the electric lighting is concerned, use sources of light underneath the shelves.
Mirror can work wonders by creating illusion of space. To add to the dimension of the small space, place the mirror strategically. This is the crafty way of illuminating the bathroom and rendering a visual expansiveness to the confined look of the bathroom.
Tricky Designs can create illusion of space
If the height of your bathroom is not so high, then there is nothing to worry. Introduce vertical lines on the upper edges of the walls, as this will give illusion of height to the bathroom space. Edge the top lining with designed border tiles, to add that extra zing to the look.
The floor area should be utilized in the best possible way. The most important aspect of the small bathroom design is that, you need to choose those bathroom tiles, which will suit the look of the bathroom. Again, to render the spacious look, the floor tiles and the wall tiles should be identical in shape and look. The color to be chosen should be light colored and should not be too loud.

How do you get a shower into a very small bathroom that wasn't designed to have one?
While I do love my bathtub when I get the opportunity to use it for a long and relaxing soak, I wouldn't give up my shower without a fight. I find that showers are quick, refreshing and much more economical than bathing. When I was redesigning my small bathroom I took the opportunity to replace the shower that was installed above the bathtub at that time.
The first thing to remember is that there usually is a way to do these things and you mustn't give up before you've really thought about the problem. Don't be put off by the fact that you don't seem to have much room to play with in your bathroom design.
So what are the options?
Remove the bathtub
Discarding the bathtub should give you more than enough room to fit in a sizeable shower enclosure. The problem is that you won't have a bath anymore. While this might suit your current lifestyle you might want to think about what you might need a few years in the future and when you come to move out and sell your property.
When you sell your property you will want it to have a bathroom with a bathtub even if it has a great shower. Buyers seem to expect to find a bath in the bathroom and the lack of one can seriously affect the selling price of your property.
Design a shower over your bathtub
If you really have no other option then you can install a showerhead above your bathtub and use a shower curtain or splashguard to keep the rest of the bathroom dry. This will probably be your easiest solution, as it will take up no extra floor space. Personally I don't like this option and would prefer a separate shower.
The Wet Room approach
This is an ambitious design that will involve turning the floor of your entire bathroom into a giant shower base and drain. It can be a very expensive option to convert a conventional bathroom into wet room but it has the advantage of allowing you to put your small bathroom shower anywhere you like. Even over the toilet if you want to although I wouldn't advise it.
Add a shower cubicle with a curved quadrant base
If you can rearrange your bathroom to get even the smallest of shower cubicles in then that has got to be close to the top of your list of possibilities. The shower enclosure can be free standing or installed along a wall or in a corner.
The problem with this idea is finding the space in a small bathroom to fit the shower enclosure. Enclosures come in various sizes so you will need first of all to decide on the smallest size that you think you can live with. Even a very small shower enclosure is better than none at all.
To make the space available you should consider the whole small bathroom design. Find a smaller toilet and washbasin and even a smaller bathtub if you have to. Use squared paper and cut out shapes to try many different ways of arranging everything.
If a square or rectangular shower cubicle looks as if it might be just that little bit too big like it did in my small bathroom then think about using a curved quadrant shower enclosure. This might be a little more expensive but it made all the difference to my bathroom and I love it.
