Kenya, the land where safari was born, also known as the cradle of mankind, is a land of unashamed splendor and great contrast. From the highlands of central Kenya to the great Rift valley and its resident lakes across to the second largest lake in the world; Lake Victoria further south to the elephants of Amboseli and a spectacular view of Africa’s highest point Mount Kilimanjaro and down to the cost where the shimmering white sands of the beaches of the Indian Ocean and ancient culture of millennia passed is still alluring to the traveler to this day.
The country is inhabited by over 40 different tribes and has over 76 different languages spoken. It’s also famous for its friendly and welcoming people.
Kenya safaris are designed to help a vacationer traverse the amazing landscape with the least hustle possible. On a safari you get to visit the savannahs of Kenya including the seventh wonder of the world “The great wildebeest migration" in the Maasai Mara, Kenya’s’ best known game reserve and arguably the best game reserve in the whole world. You get to see a plethora of wildlife including the “big five" elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo. For birding enthusiasts, there are over 1400 species recorded here, I can count over 20 species even before I leave my leafy home!
A popular add on to the safari experience in Kenya is a beach stay on the wonderful tropical beaches of Mombasa, this is the perfect opportunity to relax in the sun and take in the relaxed atmosphere of Mombasa and its culture.
Kenya safaris offer a wonderful holiday for those wildlife lovers, they can be done to suit most budgets and offer a fascinating insight in to Kenya and its spectacular wildlife.
I dare not forget the cultural hub that Nairobi is to the flamingo lakes Nakuru, Naivasha and Elementaita. You get to see endangered animals like the reticulated giraffe, rhino and Elephants of the Tsavo. To crown it all, the family of cats; lion, cheetah, and the elusive leopard. They just had to make “The big cat diary" in Kenya!
Campers will love Kenya safaris, from basic camping facilities to luxurious private luxury tented camps with all modern amenities in the bush hundreds of kilometers away from civilization, there is choice for everyone according to your budget. You can also reside in the luxurious lodges located in every game reserve and national park in the country.
A visit to Kenya is indeed a lifetime experience. Those who have been here always talk with a sense of nostalgia and make a point of visiting the country on any opportunity they can get – Kenya in Earnest Hemmingway’s words “unknowable, unimaginable, unbelievable…..and completely unforgettable"
South Africa Safari Holiday
Keekorok Lodge is situated very close to the border with Tanzania, and is in the perfect place to witness the beginning of the Great Migration in late June/July, when the Wildebeest and Zebra begin their great trek.
One of the reasons that Keekorok Lodge is a great place to be is because it is one of the oldest Kenya Safari Holiday Lodges, and so it is positioned in just the right place in the direct path of the migration.
When the great migration is at its peak sometime from August to November, it is completely surrounded by animals, a truly amazing experience.
Keekorok has large and beautiful grounds, and it has been renovated recently, with 100 rooms in bungalows, single story blocks, and comfortable chalets with large private verandas.
They are all well furnished and tastefully decorated with only the best materials. The ensuite bathrooms look out over the plains and distant hills.
Keekorok has a good swimming pool, which is a great place to relax between game drives, a restaurant and a bar, with a viewing deck over the hippo pool, which is full of hippos, and extensive walkways allowing great viewing from the lodge straight onto the game in the park.
The best and quickest way to get to Keekorok is by light aircraft, which comes in from Nairobi and Mombasa .
Food in the restaurant is of good quality, and is buffet style, with lovely cakes and fresh fruit flown in daily from Nairobi. You can sit outside on the terrace at the adjacent bar, well protected by the Masai who will also entertain you. A Kenya Safari Holiday without seeing the Masai dance is an definitely incomplete. You could need the Masai guards when you are sitting outside because Keekorok Lodge has no fences which can at times make like quite interesting, but is definitely a plus point. You might for example hear lion chasing zebra outside your room at night!!
You will see on the game drives in the Masai Mara lions and cheetahs, hyenas, and the defenseless game they follow, but the real joy of Keekorok is the wildebeest and hyena during the migration. Whatever you do, arrange a balloon trip with the champagne breakfast floating over the mass of wildebeest, which is a truly unforgettable experience.
Apart from the balloon trip, it is a good idea to organize your game drives through Keekorok, so you can be sure of being by yourself and family, and not in a minibus which many of the Kenya Safari Tour package holidays organized from home seem to be based around.
To summarize, Keekorok is a great and modern Lodge in the middle of the Masai Mara, and as such a necessary stop on any Kenya Safari Tour. It is large and busy in comparison with other lodges, but if that is what you want as part of your Kenya Holiday then you will like it very much indeed. It is well run, comfortable with excellent service
