South Africa Tourist Information
Estepona is situated around 50 miles west of Malaga next to the mountains of the Sierra Bermeja. This resort on the Costa del Sol retains a very Spanish feel, unlike many other towns on this stretch of coastline. Estepona is notable for its old town of narrow streets and traditional tapas bars, as well as its lovely beaches. Close to the resort is the popular Selwo safari park.
The focal point of the old town is the attractive square of Plaza de la Flores with its tropical plants and orange trees. Around the square are cobblestone streets lined with picturesque houses, which makes this a lovely area for a relaxing stroll. There are several historical sights worth mentioning, in particular the 15th century clock tower of La Torre del Reloj and the church of Nuestra Senora de los Remedios built during the 18th century. The latter is notable for the unusual pieces of iron ore which are embedded in the sandstone walls. Unfortunately not much remains of the great castle which stood in the town, other than a few badly ruined sections of wall.
There are four small museums situated in Estepona's bullring. The first of these, aptly enough, is the Bullfighting museum with an array of exhibits including posters and costumes. The Local Museum has a collection of farming and fishing implements, while the Palaentology Museum houses around 2,000 fossils making this one of the largest of its type in Spain. Completing the quartet is the Archaeological Museum which has an interesting display of prehistoric and ancient remains.
Estepona has an excellent town beach, Playa de la Rada, which stretches for nearly 2 miles and has several good chringuitos (beach bars) dotted along its length. At the western end of the promenade which lines this beach is a large marina with berths for up to 400 boats. The marina has several late-night discos that are especially popular with young revelers during the summer months. To the west of the marina is the fishing port where the morning fish market is held. If you wish to see this enjoyable spectacle you will have to get up early in the morning though as it is nearly over by 7am. Close to the marina is the sheltered little cove of Playa del Cristo, while a few miles to the west of Estepona is the purpose-built naturist resort of Costa Natura.
One of Estepona's biggest attractions is the popular safari park of Selwo Aventura situated about 4 miles outside the town. The park is home to about 2,000 animals, including rhinos, antelopes, tigers, lions and bears.
Just outside the town in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja is the 18-hole Estepona golf course. This benefits from a lovely natural setting which is complemented by olive, palm and eucalyptus trees. Estepona Golf is a very friendly and popular course, notable for its wide fairways and high-quality greens. There are also practice facilities such as driving range and putting green.
Estepona's nearest international airport is actually situated in Gibraltar, around 25 miles to the west, although most visitors land at Malaga airport (about 50 miles away). There are regular bus services along the coast to Marbella and La Linea from the town's central bus station.
