"That's quite an email message." I said. "That must have been pretty eerie."

"At first, yes, it was." Fred replied. "Still, when you get right down to it, it's just spam."

"Spam that says to pay or die is not your run of the mill spam." I said.

"Very true." Answered Fred and continued, "So, where do you think this is from?"

I reread the email message. A non-English speaker could have written the letter or translation software could have created the letter. I doubted that any native English speaker, however poorly educated, would write like this. I started to say so when Fred spoke up.

"I have been thinking about this for quite some time. I have never heard of anything like this before. I didn't reply as I think it is not a good idea to reply to people who are trying to scam you. Still, the first thing that came to my mind was the Nigerian scam, you know, the one where someone from Nigeria emails you and says they need your help moving money out of Nigeria. This seemed just like another variation."

I told Fred that I bet he could find something like this at the Snopes website, but Fred didn't want to look. He said he would rather think of this as his own personal death threat, even if it was not, not just as a piece of spam that was sent to many, many people.
