Here are some benefits you could gain by exchanging links with other website owners:

You can do it by submitting articles to article directories with a direct link in your signature that points to your links page. Actually everytime you submit an article to article directories you have a chance to build inbound links to any webpage you have, not only to your homepage. There is another way you can do to help the sites that you have exchanged links with. Instead of creating a link directory that looks like a link farm that only contains a list of links, try to add one or two paragraph on the top of each of categories/subcategories.
