The International Energy Agency is warning that there is unlikely to be much relief from current high oil prices because of brisk demand in China and other emerging markets and analysts aren't convinced that the huge runup in oil prices has run its course. The White House says that soaring oil prices are "not going to be solved overnight" and that "it would be wrong" of President Bush to promise otherwise. Presidential spokeswoman said Tuesday on Air Force One that "there are some things we cannot do." Her comments came as oil prices rose above $109 a barrel for the first time. They are up from $87 a barrel in January. Trade deficit grows as imports reach record highs in January.
WASHINGTON ? The United States' trade deficit grew larger in January
As imports ? including crude oil prices ? zoomed to all-time highs. The latest snapshot of trade activity, reported by the Commerce Department, showed that the country's trade gap increased to $58.2 billion. That was up from a trade shortfall of $57.9 billion in December and was the highest since November 2007. Imports of goods and services climbed to a record high of $206.4 billion in January. The United States' appetite for imported crude oil, whose prices skyrocketed to the loftiest on record, figured into the increasing demand for overall imports.
The higher gas prices have some people hopping on the bus to save money.
I met a lady at a bus which told me riding the bus takes a little getting used to. "When you first start riding the bus, it's hard to get used to the fact that you're on their schedule and you can't jump in and get there in 20 minutes," She said. "But after a little bit of time, you get used to it, and it works out really well." She says it takes her one hour to get from work to home. She said with gas prices over $3 a gallon, it's worth it to take the bus. "I buy the monthly pass for $44," she says. "I figured it out that it's still worth it for me if the bus pass hits $66 its still worth it for me." Are higher gas prices causing people to park their car and take the bus? These bus riders we talked to say they think the buses are more crowded. "Yeah, there's a lot," one man said. "Buses are crowded, let me tell you, a lot of people," another man said. "I've heard a lot more people say they ride the bus because of the gas prices," one woman said. The Bus system says it's too early to tell if the prices are causing more people to board the bus. With all of that said you can work from home and not have to get in your car and spend that 100 dollar bill for gas in your small car. You will need an internet connection, some computer skills, just a little, and the money you save on gas you can put into your online business.
