Historically, Leeds is one of the famous industrial municipals of England, a powerhouse that drove the economic engine of the race. Nowadays it is a cosmopolitan and multicultural metropolis, offering some of Yorkshire's prime architecture, restaurants, sporting venues, theatre and ballet. The 3-day Leeds Festival is one of the world's most idealistic music events which in new years has played host to such luminaries as Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam, The Pixies and The Killers. It is placed within the serene countryside which offsets the liveliness of its municipality middle.



Sites of leisure include the newly-opened Leeds municipality Museum in Millennium Square. This gives a comprehensive guiding light to the experiences of this distinguished metropolitan area. Check out the simulated Victorian highways of the Abbey House Museum in the former gatehouse of Kirkstall Abbey. Amongst the superlative galleries in Leeds are the Henry Moore Institute and the Leeds Art Gallery which contain a multitude intriguing up-to-the-minute British art. The place is also loaded with past attractiveness that day-trippers are sure to appreciate. One might well appreciate strolling the gardens of the Harewood House or Bramham Park, or a traveller might appreciate a day seeing the Leeds conurbation Museum in Millennium Square, which has a total of four floors filled with displays and exhibitions.

Leeds is a kind of Mecca for food and drink lovers. There is everything on offer from traditional South Asian menu to French to Mexican and Chinese. Stresses include the Raggald, offering traditional British public house grub home-cooked to exemplary standards, the Olive Press where such classic Italian dishes as brick-fired lamb glazed with parmesan are served, and Akbars posted at Eastgate which is renowned for its curries, especially its vegetarian pakoras and chana baltis. There are, as you would imagine, just as renowned a selection of bars in Leeds, the utmost being Sandinista, the Reform and Mojo.

The metropolis Varieties Music Hall was where Charlie Chaplin and Harry Houdini performed. Home to Opera North, the magnificent dynamite Theatre is also one of Leeds' enlightening hotspots, as is the West Yorkshire Playhouse. For more up-to-date live music, check out The Cockpit, Joseph's Well, The Wardrobe and the Fox & Newt. Majestyk is regarded as the largest and choice club in the city, placed in the city Square. For Motown, disco, underground house and funk, try the Mint Club at 8, Harrison Street. For a more dated-school, sit-down jazz club, try Coopers, placed at Osley. There is a microscopic entrance fee but food is available while you sit back and appreciate those cool rhythms.

In summary then, Leeds has something for everybody, despite its relatively minuscule size and distance from the capital. Careful redevelopment over current years has created a whole wealth of amusement and leisure options without ruining the architecture and documented mood of the quarter. Leeds is a successful example of a conurbation whose new features coexist with its old ones to create a very individual atmosphere. Whether you are there for a day or a week or even longer, it is highly unlikely you will get bored of all the restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs, tourist charm, theatres and museums.
