Stock Market Is Closed

Cancer, India's Lunar Ascendant

India's birth constellation is Pushya and India is undergoing the dreaded Elarata Saturnine phase.

India's Independence Chart ( 15/08/1947, 00.00 AM, Delhi )

Asc Taurus, Rahu, Gemini - Gul & Mar, Cancer - Sun, Mer, Moo, Ven & Sat, Libra - Jupiter & Ketu in Scorpio

We had indicated that the Stock Market will go up & there will be vicious fluctuations and cyclical upheavals. There will be many small booms and busts in the market. This is because of the Elarata Saturn which India is undergoing.

The Stock Market revived due to Jupiter 's transit of the 5th. Jupiter, the planet of finance, can uplift the economy during his fifth transit. No wonder the media is talking about the 4.3 % agricultural growth, the 8.5 % G D P growth and the good monsoon which triggered it, Sensex above 20000, and the growth of sectors which record growth - software, steel , auto & automotive components !

Small booms and busts are to be expected. The Wave Theory still holds good in stocks. The Sensex dipped after it touched 20000 and touched 18000 earlier. But bull run means rising resistance and support levels.

Correlation between Stock Market Cycles & Jupiterian Cycles

The last boom was when Jupiter was in the 11th in India's horoscope ( 2001 ). Jupiter was in the adverse 12th and 1st in the next 2 years and we had the Stock Market in a state of Recession.

Contrarian Investing

This is the quintessence of the stock market. " Buy when everybody is selling, sell when everybody is buying", which in essence means " Buy cheap, sell dear".

We have to understand the negative aspect of the secondary market. The secondary market, taken in isolation and as a closed system, is basically a zero sum game. When a man sells a share, either the buyer or the seller has made a mistake. Money only changes hands. So smart investing is Contrarian Investing, buying at unjustifiably low levels and selling at unjustifiably high levels ! There is no such thing as an Intrinsic Value for a share. Markets are always irrational, unpredictable and fluctuating. There will be intra-day fluctuations, intra-week fluctuations and intra-month fluctuations. Within the Bull Phase and the Bear Phase, there will be small booms and busts, making it difficult to predict the future. There are two ways to combat these types of uncertain fluctuations

- Technical Analysis and Fundamental Analysis

Technical Analysis

This is drawing the graph of the Index every day. All scrips display regular and recurrent patterns of price behaviour. During the last boom of 2001, the Sensex touched 6000, emulating the earlier boom. You will come to know about the resistance & support levels of the Sensex and all scrips if you take regular graphs. Graphs can be made in Excel.

Fundamental Analysis

F A is studying the fundamentals of scrips - the Book Value of a share, the Price/Earnings of a share, the EPS of a share and then investing based on these fundamentals. You can buy the highly potential shares at their support levels.

The Cyclical Nature of the Stock Market & Business Cycles

The Business Cycles of Boom and Recession rule all markets. A boom means that the economy has extended itself and a Recession becomes due to restore it to its original balance. The Business Cycles of Prosperity and Adversity come to all men.

We find that all markets are cyclical and the Stock Market is the most volatile of all markets. During the 1992 boom, the Sensex reached 4000 and then it crashed to 2000 odd. During the Ketan Parekh initiated bull run of 2001, it reached 6151 ! The current boom may very well surpass that level ! Slowly and steadily the crowd is getting involved and all sorts of bullish news are given by the media. It is paradoxical that during Bull Phases all sorts of bullish news come from the media and during Bear Phases, only bearish news !

Scrips which are worth investing are IOC, ONGC, SBI, Dr Reddy's, Ranbaxy, CIPLA, Lupin, Tata Motors, HPCL, BPCL, IBP, Infosys, Hughes Software, HCL Infosys, G A C L etc.

The well-known goods trader Ed Seykota, who turned $5,000 into $15 million over a period of 12 years, was teaching a form in technical trading to a college class some years ago when he decided to conduct an experiment to illustrate to his students the value of money management, or position-sizing - that is, learning how much money you will risk on any individual given trade - to the universal success of any trader's trading plan.

He said his class they were going to contend in a trading competition with each other. Each student would start with a supposed equity stake of $100,000. The winner, of form, would be the student with the most money at the end of the contest. However, there was a catch: Each student would buy and sell the same stocks at the same right time, meaning those stocks would rise or fall exactly the same amount. In fact, Seykota pulled each "stock" out of a hat at the front of the room, and simply said the students whether it had gone up or down and by how often.

How do you conduct a trading contest when everyone buys and sells the right same stocks at the correct same time? It is all about position-sizing - how often money you are willing to bet on each trade. After Seykota chose each stock, but before he declared whether it had gone up or down, each pupil was required to write down the amount of money he or she was willing to risk on that trade. They could risk as little or as often as they wanted.

The results of the competition provided quite an education for Seykota's students - and should be remembered by anyone who puts their hard-earned money at risk in the market. By the end of the competition some of the students had lost their entire hypothetical stake and were totally "broke". Others had come out about even, making a little money or losing a little money. But a few of the best students - the best traders - had turned that supposed $100,000 into over $1 million!

Think about it: Two traders start with the same amount of money and buy and sell the right same stocks at the right same time. One goes broke. The other makes 1,000%! Therein lies the secret to survival, and ultimately success, as a dealer. All the great traders will tell you that position-sizing is the individual most important factor in their success.

So how often should you risk on any individual trade - in other words, how much should you be willing to lose? It is best to risk a firm percentage of your account value on every trade, and not vary that percent from trade to trade. What that percentage should be depends on several critical factors. The most critical are your win-loss ratio, the size of your average win and the size of your average loss. Given these three numbers, your position sizing will determine whether you live or die as a trader.

The point of position-sizing is to be sure that you don't part the bank during a losing streak. Even a random coin toss can produce 10 tails consecutively, so make no mistake that even the best traders suffer through losing streaks of equal length. If you risk, say 10% of your account on every trade, and your average loss is 7%, a losing streak of 10 in a row could be destructive. On the other hand, if you are a day trader and your average loss is .5%, you can risk more money on each trade without worrying about a losing streak taking you out of the game.

Seykota says he never risks more than 5% of his account on any single trade. some other highly successful traders think risking anything more than 3% of your account on a individual trade makes you a "cowboy". A good beginning point for beginning traders is probably 1% of your account. The added advantage of lower risk for beginners is that it helps minimize the emotions that often intervene with good trading.

For a detailed discussion of position-sizing, we highly recommend Van Tharp's book "Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom". An internationally renowned trading coach, Tharp was profiled along with Seykota in "Market Wizards", Jack Schwager's classic collection of profiles of some of the most brilliant traders and trading minds of all time.
