Summer Bass Fishing Tips

    View:
Fishing is a very popular sport that millions of people enjoy on a regular basis. When it comes to fishing, bass is certainly one of the most popular species sought after by all types of anglers. There are several reasons why bass fishing is so popular. For instance, it is perfect for the family that enjoys going fishing for fun and recreation or for the serious angle that is going after that trophy fish. A family can go out and spend quality time together competing against one another to see who brings in the largest or the most bass for the day. It is a great way to bring families closer together.

The serious anglers are in it for the competitions and tournaments that are set up every year. These bass fishing events offer many great rewards ranging from large cash prizes to brand new fishing boats. This is why anglers spend so much time learning new ways to improve their techniques. It is a great feeling to be a part of these competitions and something that many anglers spend years working towards.

Another reason that bass fishing has become so popular is the fact that they are a challenge to catch. This species of fish can really put up a great fight. It takes skill and practice to become a good bass angler. You need to spend time learning the habits of the bass, where they live and what types of bait attracts them the most. You also need to learn different techniques to see which ones work best for you. The more you learn about bass fishing the more successful you can be each time you go out.

Here are the top five bass fishing tips that can help make all of your fishing trips a successful one.

Know Your Location - It is always wise to learn as much about the location where you are fishing as possible. When you know where to look for the bass you can spend more time fishing and less time searching for the fish. Bass are most likely to be found in grassy areas, under or around natural and man-made shelters and near banks and ledges.

Be Observant - The more observant you are the better off you will be. For example, if you pay close attention to what the bass are eating before you throw in your line you will know which type of bait would produce the best results. The closer you match their natural food source the more success you will have.

Real Estate agents all tell us "It's all about location..location..location. It is said that 80% of the fish are caught in 20% of the water. Where to fish is as important as where to build a house. One common theme to the diet of largemouth bass is that they take advantage of the structural edges to capture their prey.

There is also a rule that bass and all living predators use. The energy used to catch food cannot be greater than the energy the food caught provides. If the energy used to catch food is greater than that the food provides, the predator will eventually die. Edges come in many forms and nearly all will attract and hold bass at one time or another.

Weed edges: Many forms of aquatic vegetation offer prime bass habitat. Whether you are fishing the edges of lily pads, pondweed or milfoil, always look for the "spot on the spot". The outer edges always seem to hold fish, but look for inside turns, breaks or weed points. Many times the inside weed edge is often overlooked and can be very productive especially in the morning and evening. The weed edges act as a place refuge as well as a place of ambush for bass. Eat and watch out so you're not eaten.

Current edges: Smallmouth bass will seek spots in rivers that serve as a ambush point but also a resting point to expend as little energy as possible. Large boulders and turns in the river are prime places to look for active smallmouth bass. Current is also found in lakes. Many large lakes can have current on windy days in the neck areas in channels or in between islands. The current often times will push in baitfish for an easy meal. There are times that the bass can be stacked in these areas on windy days

Structural edges: Bass will often establish a" pecking order" on the prime structures. The prime structure edges include fallen trees and logs, docks, bridges, marinas etc.

Shade edges: Shade is one of the most overlooked edges of all. Docks, although a structure also provides a shady area away from the sun. Trees also provide a shade edge. Early morning and evening can provide some of the best bass fishing in the day. One reason is the shade edge that is created by low sun angles behind trees and the horizon. Just think how at night when you have the lights on in your house, it is harder to see out in the dark, but it is very easy to see from a dark outside to a lighted home. These edges give the bass a very dramatic advantage over their prey.

If you can ever combine different types of edges into one area than you have your "A" spot for fishing. Seeking these structural edges will provide you with an advantage on having greater success on your next bass fishing trip.
