Symptoms Of Common Cold

    View:
Common Colds are most prevalent among children, and seem to be related to youngsters relative lack of resistance to infection and to contacts with other children in day-care centers and schools. Children have about six to ten colds a year. In families with children in school, the number of colds per child can be as high as 12 a year. Adults average about two to four colds a year, although the range varies widely. Women, especially those aged 20 to 30 years, have more colds than men, possibly because of their closer contact with children. On average, individuals older than 60 have fewer than one cold a year.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a cold include sneezing, sniffing, running/blocked nose (often these occur simultaneously, or one in each nostril), scratchy, sore, or phlegmy throat, coughing, headache, and a general feeling of unwellness; they last between 3 to 10 days, with residual coughing lasting up to 3 weeks. It is the most common of all diseases, infecting subjects at an average of slightly over one infection per year with greater than 3 infections per year not uncommon in some populations. Children and their caretakers are at a higher risk, probably due to the high population density of schools and the fact that transmission to family members or caretakers is highly efficient.

Causes

The common cold is caused by numerous viruses (mainly rhinoviruses, coronaviruses and also certain echoviruses and coxsackieviruses) infecting the upper respiratory system. Several hundred cold causing viruses have been described, and a virus can mutate to survive, ensuring that any cure is still a long way off if not impossible. These are transmitted from person to person by droplets resulting from coughs or sneezes. The droplets are either inhaled directly, or, more commonly, transmitted from hand to hand via handshakes or objects such as door knobs, and then introduced to the nasal passages when the hand touches the nose, mouth or eyes.

Treatment

Common cold treatment options include bed rest, drinking lots of fluids, and taking cold medications. No common cold treatment will actually shorten or prevent colds, but treatments can provide relief from cold symptoms. Check with your doctor before giving medications to children as a common cold treatment; some medications, like aspirin, have been linked to the development of more serious conditions.
Symptoms Of Common Cold
Because mesothelioma symptoms resemble those of common aliments, victims of the rare cancer are often misdiagnosed. As a result of such misdiagnosis, most cases of mesothelioma are not detected until the cancer is in an advanced stage, making it difficult to treat. If you are experiencing these symptoms, contact us for more information and resources about mesothelioma.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that attacks the mesothelium, a protective sac that lines the lungs, stomach and heart. Mesothelioma is the only form of cancer directly caused by .

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of multiple strands of durable fibers. Because of its durability and strength, asbestos was widely used in maritime, industrial, automotive and building products during the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s.

Although asbestos is not harmful in its natural state, once it is broken down or disturbed, the fibers separate, forming a toxic dust that can be easily inhaled through the nose and mouth. If ingested, the fibers can become lodged into the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. Over a period of time, the fibers can cause severe irritation, leading to the development of .

Asbestos Was Widely Used Until the Early 1980s

Because the effects of asbestos were not discovered until the 1970s, regulations banning its use were not enforced until the early 1980s. This means that many products found in our homes, schools, vehicles and boats still may contain asbestos-laden products.

One of the reasons the fatal effects of asbestos were not revealed until the 1970s, is because symptoms can take up to 50 years to develop. Thus, many individuals who unknowingly worked with asbestos-containing products before the 1980s, such as navy veterans, construction workers, miners, painters, mechanics, shipbuilders and steel mill workers are just now showing symptoms of mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos-caused diseases.

Have You Been Exposed to Asbestos?

If you think you may have been exposed to asbestos in the workplace, at home or at school, or if you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above ? chronic coughing, shortness of breath, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain or chest pain ? you should contact your physician immediately for a full examination.
