Symptoms Of Mold Allergy

    View:
Mold is a live organism that is found both indoors and outdoors. Certain varieties of mold, such as black mold, can act as a poison to human systems. It decomposes dead material and grows by digesting plant or animal material. It spreads by air-born spores. The majority of molds are transported by the wind. Molds are attracted to and grow quickly in dark, damp places. Such places include garbage cans, basements, or rotting leaves. On food, mold is typically visible by being usually green and fuzzy. Mold can also spread its roots and branches deep into the food making it invisible to the eye. It is for this reason that if you see mold growing on food you should discard it.

Everyone is exposed to some mold on a daily basis. Usually the results of this exposure are not serious in any way. We may be exposed to mold in the air or we may eat food containing mold spores that are just not visible yet. People with mold allergies can tolerate mold up to a point, after which they will have a reaction from being exposed to too much mold at one time.

Some of the symptoms of a mold allergy are sinus problems, itchy or watery eyes, wheezing, and a rash or even hives. With this type of allergy, it is almost impossible to completely avoid mold spores. Mold spores are simply too prevalent, as they are around us all the time. One of the simplest things a person can do to protect themselves is to avoid eating food showing any signs of mold. You should not smell foods that you think may be spoiled because you may then inhale mold spores. You might also be advised to avoid certain foods such as blue cheese, mushrooms, and yeast products.

Other common mold sources are vinegar and foods containing vinegar, yeasty foods, sour cream, sour milk, and buttermilk, and sauerkraut. Anything that is pickled or smoked has the potential to contain mold. Dried fruits are also exposed to mold spores because they are exposed to the air, as well as anything canned. You may want to avoid these items whenever possible so you an avoid having an allergy attack.
Symptoms Of Mold Allergy
The humid and moist climate cause those who suffer from mold allergies to have them year around. Since the temperature never gets cold enough and there is ample rain fall year around to produce mold spores.

Why are my mold allergies worse after a rain storm?

The days following a rain storm are especially bad for those suffering from mold allergy. For years allergist thought that rain storms where good in that they washed all of the mold and other allergens out of the air. In reality the opposite is true a rain storm stirs up the mold spores and other allergens sending them into the air. In addition the standing rain water increases the mold spore production which exacerbates a person's mold allergy.

Can I have a mold allergy indoors?

Is there a room or rooms in your home that cause your mold allergies to act up? After being in the room for a few minutes your eyes begin to water and you feel the sinus pressure begin to build. This is a clear sign that mold is growing somewhere in this room. Unfortunately, our homes are not immune to mold, rather our homes have several places that can be ideal place for mold to grow.

Bathrooms have several water sources that make ideal mold growth zones.

? Under the rim of the toilet bowl.

? Shower around the window (if your bathroom has a window).

? Shower head

? Underneath liquid soap and conditioner bottles.

? Anti slip bath tub mat.

? Towel drying rack ? especially if it is made out of wood.

? Vanity sink drain. Hair and other debris collect in the sink drain and provide an excellent environment for mold to grow.

Cellar / Basement

? A poorly waterproofed cellar can turn into a damp and moist environment that is ideal to grow mold that will trigger your mold allergy. Poor ventilation or no ventilation will only increase the amount of humidity and moisture.

Air Conditioner Evaporator Coil

? The air conditioner expansion coil is inside the house. It is were the refrigerant expands and the air is forced through to cool off your home. When the coil becomes clogged with dirt it provides a great place for mold to grow. Each time the air conditioner runs mold spores will be scattered through out your home and your mold allergies be in full swing.

How to reclaim your home from mold? permanently.

Water Closet

? Run the exhaust fan during and afterwards each time the shower or bath tub is used. By running the exhaust fan it will pull the humid, moist air out of the bathroom.

? After each shower wipe off all standing water.

? Use a bleach cleaning agent to kill off any mold colonies that you find.

? Hang up the bath tub anti-slip mat after each use.

? If the anti-slip mat begins to grow mold and cleaning it has failed, throw it out. It is not worth causing your mold allergy to flare up. Just the act of throwing out the anti-slip mat will cause your mold allergy to flare up.

? To get rid of any mold growing in the toilet bowl rim use a toilet tank treatment that is activated each time the toilet is flushed.

Cellar / Basement

? Have the exterior of the cellar retaining walls water proofed to reduce the amount of moister coming into the basement from the outside.

? For unfinished cellar add additional ventilation.

? Cellars that are finished or partly finished out add additional air conditioning ducts and return air vents.

Air Conditioner Evaporator Coil

? Have an air conditioning company inspect the coil, clean or replace as needed.

? Change out the air conditioner filters on a regular intervals.

? Pleated paper air filters are much more effective in trapping air born dust than the fiber glass filters.

Mold allergies vary from seasonal to year around based on where you live. Even indoors there are many places were mold can grow and cause a mold allergy attack. There are several steps that you can to reduce your exposure to mold spores that leads to a mold allergy attack.
