Taking Care Of Your Pool ? Part One

    View:
Maintaining a pool can be hard at times. The typical wading pool is easy of course, but bigger pools require much more maintenance. Maintaining an in-ground swimming pool requires one to monitor many things such as PH, types of filters, algae color and extermination, chlorine levels, water hardness, and more. Care of pool water is important knowledge to have.

Maintaining proper PH in your pool is crucial. In order for your pool to be safe for human use, the proper PH level must be maintained. The amount of acidity in the pool water is reflected in its PH. The pool will be toxic if too much of acid is added to it. The same holds true if there is not enough acid. For the safety of your swimmers, keep careful watch over the PH of your pool. When heat peaks during the summer, the PH should be checked every couple of days and at least once every four weeks during the winter months. If you plan to swim during the winter and spring, you must check the PH level of the pool carefully, because rain adds acid to a pool.

Small kits for checking the PH of your pool can be purchased in stores. The kit you buy will generally come with a little package of reagent and a flask or vial to test pool water in. All that is required is to take out some pool water in the tube, add several drops from the regent bottle, and shake. The color of the water can change from orange to violet due to the presence of reagent. A PH range of 7.4 to 7.6 is suitable and appears on the box's side within a color coded table. You can use the side of the box to see if you have the proper PH level. If the proper levels are not maintained, you'll have to spend the money to buy either an increaser or decreaser.

It is important to note that the PH and chlorine levels are equally as important to keep track of. A pool's water can quickly begin to look like an algae pond. This condition results from not having a proper level of chlorine. Adding chlorine tables to a chlorine filter devise usually fixes this problem. Such a filter is easy to keep up. You simply add two new tablets every few days or so. But have you had the opposite experience of a pool that stinks of chlorine? If the pool contains too much chlorine you should avoid swimming. Too much of this chemical can burn your skin.

Don't fret; in the summertime the chlorine doesn't last that long, so your pool will quickly become useable again. When the summer is at its hottest, you will have to use more chlorine tablets in your pool, as heat eats up chlorine fast. Even common products at the pool, such as body oil and suntan lotion, can eat up any chlorine you may add. And know that things will fall in, especially when children are around! There is a simple procedure to check the chlorine level. You can purchase a testing kit, just as with testing the PH level. All you have to do is put pool water in the tube, add a few drops of the reagent, shake it up, and match the color to the chart on the box. In the summer, when your pool is getting a lot of use, you need to do chlorine tests frequently (every other day or so), compared to the winter months when you only need to test about once a week.

While you will need to check on the Ph and chlorine, this is an easy task. For some people, remembering to keep up with all of the steps, all of the chemicals, and all of the testing kits can seem a little daunting, especially if you have a nice pool. This is why it is a good investment to hire a pool care service. You will often spend the same amount of money hiring a pool service as it costs to buy the products you need each month. With a pool service, all the trouble of owning a pool disappears. Merely take the cover off your pool and jump in.
