The former name of Lyon is Lyons and it is a city on the right central of France. It is one of the biggest cities in France and is the centre of a the biggest business in France. Also Lyon played a very big role in the history of France. Lyon has more then 1.6 million inhabitants and is the 23rd biggest city of western Europe. Lyon is also the capital of the province called Lyon. The region of Lyon is also called Lyonais region and that is a popular name for it. It is also the silk capital of the world and is a centre for fashion. Lyon dates back to 43 BC and is founded by a lieutenant of Caesar. So Lyon started out as a Roman colony. The first name of Lyon was the hill of lights or the hull of crows. In the 13th century there was only a dialect spoken in Lyon called Arpitan and this dialect was later replaced for the French language. For centuries Lyon has been famous as the capital of the Gastronomy. Also the cinema was invented here by the Lumiere Brothers in 1895. There is also a famous church there called the Saint Francis of Sales and it is famous for its great pipe organ which is attraction tourists from all over the world. In the region of Lyon there are also two of the most famous wine-growing regions called the Beaujolais and the cotes de la Rhone. There are a lot of things you can visit like the Le Gros Caillou that is located on the boulevard of Croix Rousse. It is a big stone and around the stone there is a big myth it would be the heart of baliff turned into stone. It is discovered in 1890 by some tunnel workers. Lyon also has a very nice opera called Opera de Lyon. The opera is designed by Chenavard and has a capacity of 1200 seats. The hall is lined with black wood and gold and it looks very picturesque. Make sure to give it a visit or pay a visit to palais du commerce. This palais was opened in 1862 by the countries rules. The palace was made for businesses and today it remains the chamber of commerce and industry. When you are in Lyon make sure to visit Perouges. This is a great tourist attraction and attracts tourists from all over the world. It is a medieval city very near to Lyon and it was once a very active city. Shots from several movies can be found there like the :?The three musketeers?. This city was home to weavers, farmers and craftsmen. When I was in Lyon I also visited the Tour metallique it's Eiffel tower's little sister this tower is 262 feet high. There is only one big problem and that is that you can't use the elevator. To make a long story short, Lyon is a great city with lots of history and lots of things you can see and visit.
