The Art Of Positive Thinking

    View:
Just a couple of weeks ago, I spent a day with a dozen "old-timers" clients with whom I've been working for years. Early on in the discussion, as we chatted about how psychology and quantum physics proves that you get what you expect, so that, if you expect something different, something different does, indeed, happen, one of the group mentioned that he tries to ensure that, each morning, he starts the day in a positive state of mind.

We started talking about how many motivational experts claim great benefits for the technique of self-affirmation. You know the kind of thing. You leap out of bed in the morning, admire yourself in the mirror and tell yourself "I am a wonderful person - I am powerful and successful - I am calm, cool under pressure, a great motivator - to myself and others. Today is a fabulous day - my best day yet".

And, then, you leave the house only to discover that it's pouring rain, your car won't start, you end up dead late for work, soaked, miserable, stressed out, to be met by a boss who tells you that you're good for nothing and that, if you don't pull yourself together, you need to start looking for something else to do.

As I pointed out to my friend, if I think positive thoughts, I set myself up for disappointment. A lot of positive thinking people try to fool themselves into the idea that only good things can happen them - and you and I know that that is simply not true. A lot of positive thinking is just that - thinking. And thinking generally takes place in your conscious mind - you know, the part of your mind that has 50,000 random thoughts every day, the part of your mind that plays no active part in dictating how you behave and react, how you life your everyday life.

Research indicates that affirmation, in the conscious mind, does work - but it takes forever for the constant conscious thoughts to drip, drip, drip into the subconscious. Far better to ensure that, each morning, you start the day in a clear state of mind. It only takes five minutes - a short mental exercise - to set yourself on the right road for the day ahead.

In a clear state of mind, you slip past the distraction of the conscious mind and gain direct access to your subconscious - the part of your mind that does dictate how you act and behave, the part of the inner you that literally creates your daily life. Then, you're in the state of mind to ensure that you take advantage of all the opportunities today will throw in your direction.

I'm not saying that you can stop it pouring rain. I'm also not saying that, if your car is broken down, that your state of mind will start your car - although Stanford University has more than once proved that state of mind affects apparently inanimate objects - from kettles to computers. So, actually, I am saying that you can start your car.

But, even if your car doesn't start, you might meet and chat to someone on the bus or train that you wouldn't have otherwise met - some stranger that could change the course of your life. Sure, weren't all our closest 'nearests and dearests' strangers at one point in our lives. And, if you're feeling miserable, wet and stressed out because you're going to be late for work - if you've disappointed yourself because your positive thinking came to nothing - you'll be in no mood to even meet a fellow passenger's eye.

And, if your boss does tell you what he thinks of you - in a clear state of mind, you might just take the action that you should have taken long before. You'll only react, feel victimised, depressed, if you've started the day thinking - yes, thinking - that today is your best day yet!

All my clients know - because when they stop to reflect on it they realise just how many benefits they've seen - that a clear state of mind is the only state of mind worth having. Cultivate your clear state of mind every day - it will lead you onwards and upwards.

The Art Of Positive Thinking
Positive thinking is a method used by many people the world over for many different reasons. It is a way of using the mind to allow positive thoughts, dreams, ideas, goals and other notions to drift through your mind, allowing for a greater understanding and acceptance of these things. By practicing positive thinking you are opening yourself up to experiencing good and beneficial outcomes in your life. You will begin to see the good in situations instead of focusing on negative aspects, you will not dwell on things that have brought you unhappiness - instead you will see it as a learning curve.

Not everyone believes in the power of positive thinking and they scoff at the idea of the subconscious mind playing a role in our goal setting. They don't believe that positive thinking can have any impact on their life whatsoever and that anything they get in life is all due to fate - it was meant to happen that way. This is a perfectly reasonable attitude to have but it does seem somewhat narrow minded to those who practice positive thinking.

The subconscious mind plays a very large part in the process of positive thinking, it is used to allow thoughts to enter a person's consciousness and grow in a beneficial way. The law of attraction is also used in positive thinking, this is the theory that if a person thinks about attaining something in life for long enough it will happen. Just thinking about something however is not the way in which the law of attraction works - for example you might dream about owning a mansion but that is as far as it goes.

The law of attraction works on a different level, when used in conjunction with positive thinking it is argued that a person will take subtle steps to achieving what they want. They might not be fully aware that they are doing this, and this is where the subconscious mind comes into play. A person may think about retraining for a change of career, they may start to engage in goal setting and start to behave in a different way. All of these things are small changes and they may take time but they are all working towards the one aim. Even if the person using the law of attraction doesn't get exactly what they are hoping for they will find happiness stems from the small changes they make as they are all for the better and improve their life.

Goal setting is another important aspect of positive thinking, it allows a person to decide on something they would like to gain or achieve in life and then set out to do so. For example, a person may want to overcome a difficult situation such as a divorce and they may find that by practicing positive thinking they can turn the situation around. Rather than dwelling on the break up of a marriage, a person who practices positive thinking would think of it as a chance to do things they had never done before. By using goal setting, they may decide they are going to set themselves the goal of going to a night class, or taking up another new challenge. And all of this can be achieved by positive thinking.

Positive thinking is not just about goal setting and using the law of attraction to get results in their life, it can also be about using the subconscious mind to heal themselves.

Individuals who contract potentially fatal diseases such as cancer, often turn to positive thinking, as a way of strengthen themselves from within. In fact those who have used positive thinking when facing treatments have found that they have had beneficial results. They face each day with a renewed positive attitude, which comes from positive thinking and this can have an astounding impact on their recovery. Their subconscious mind is feeding their body with positive energy and this boosts their whole being, aiding recovery and invigorating them.

Positive thinking is what you make it and if you are able to allow your subconscious mind to help you with goal setting you will be on your way to achieving whatever you want in life.
