The Future Of Green

    View:
With all the greening of America and the talk of the Kyoto environmental accords does the “green sector “offer job and career opportunities for you? After all many industries are now affected be “environmental “concerns and industry as well as state, local and federal demands.

Indeed the environmental “green “sector is one of the fastest growing fields in the labor market/. With higher than average salaries, unprecedented growth and huge vacancies, the green, or environmental is offering an exciting an expanding alterative to many other more staid job and employment markets.

Green jobs cut across multiple sectors and are multidisciplinary in nature, touching on virtually every aspect of the American economy. There is a huge potential for people to work where they want. Every geographic and indeed every industry in America is exempt from environmental requirements. True while opportunities can be said to geographically specific – say with oil refineries in Texas and in industrial areas on the eastern seaboard there are opportunities nationwide and indeed in your local areas.

Many companies that a reputation of goodwill and good product can be sullied in a moment. Companies now strive to be considered good corporate citizens. A 60 minutes camera crew at head office is not good for anyone's career advancement.

Generally organizations with green activities tend to fall into three categories, Environmental goods and services, which often require licenses and monitoring in their programs; revenue generating companies which are largely governed by self interest ,such as mining and forestry, but which also comply with very strict environmental policies; and government.. Employees of these organizations undertake a wide variety of initiatives. with water quality , testing and monitoring being the most common, followed by waste management, environmental training and education with public awareness following close behind.

Generally, although not exclusively e environmental practitioners have high levels of post secondary education as well. About 70 % hold university degrees while the remainders hold college degrees. About 35 percent of all environmental practitioners are female.

.

But as more and more workers seek retirement, the green industry is currently experiencing a most severe shortage of employees, most prevalent at the middle and senior levels of staffing and management. It became apparent as early as 2004 that were tons of vacancies that companies could not fill. Not enough young people at colleges and universities consider the possibilities of environmental jobs and employment. As a result there is a shortfall if graduates with environmentally related degrees. You would think that at this point in technology that high school kids have good levels of math skills and comprehension of science with all the times kids spend on computers. Sadly these kids are often doing not much more than email, downloading and burning music or playing computer games on the internet. These green jobs are not only environmental. The skillsets fills the gamut. English majors are needed to write Technical documents and prepare presentations. Graphic designers and video editors are needed to prepare professional videos and audio presentations. Computer people are needed to write computer programs for the field – including specialized monitoring software as well as to develop and maintain computer network systems.

There is a clean, clear bright future in the employment areas of the “green field”
