Alexandra Palace which is at the top of the steeply sloping Alexander Park, one can have a panoramic view of London. It has the great Victorian glass-house and is popularly known as 'Ally Pally', once housed the BBC's television studio and the first BBC telecast went out live from the Alexandra Palace studios in 1936. However now the building is an entertainment and exhibition centre, with an indoor ice-skating rink. The park has 200 acres and has been given free access to public. The park around the Palace has sporting facilities and plenty of attractions for children. Its features include a children’s playground, boating lake and small animal enclosure.



The Blackheath Park is south-west to Greenwich Park, and has 170 acres of open heath and has a long history. The area was a rallying spot for huge groups entering London from the east. The heath has two ponds, one used for boating at the weekends.

Dulwich Park is an old park which was established in the reign of Queen Victoria. It has 75 wooded acres and there is a great view of the mast of the Crystal Palace TV transmitter.

Epping Forest is the remnant of one of the great oak forests that bordered London until medieval times. There are about 6,000 acres of ancient forest, and an additional 2,000 acres, which have been acquired to protect the area from development. Much of the forest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest as there are over 360 rare plants and animal species present there and about 500 deer roam in the forest and deer sanctuary.

Greenwich Park is a beautiful 163 acre park set on a hill between Blackheath and the River Thames. The Old Royal Observatory and Flamstead House, created by Sir Christopher Wren, stand at the top of the hill. The meridian (0º longitude) dividing the globe into East and West passes through Greenwich Park at the Old Royal Observatory.

The Hampton Gardens and parks consist of 550 acres of deer-inhabited parkland. The main attraction of the gardens is the Pond Garden, a sunken water garden. The Fountain Garden has a formal pattern of yews and from here the Broad Walk runs across Home Park. Long Water, a man-made lake, runs parallel to the Thames. There is also a Victorian garden and the famous Maze.

Hampstead Heath is one of the capital's most popular outer green spaces. The rolling, semi-landscaped Heath divides the hilltop villages of Hampstead and Highgate and was formed from the grounds of several, separate properties.

Wimbledon Common is a vast area of open heath and woodland, stretching for more than two miles, it is criss-crossed by paths and horse tracks. In the north-east place is a windmill dating from 1817.

The Wetland Centre is the conception of the late Sir Peter Scott's Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. It has 105 acres of disused waterworks, amazingly close to the centre of London.
