The History Of Niagara Falls

    View:
The sound of the falling water and the sheer breath taking sheen of mist makes every one amazed. People who visit the Niagara Falls are spell bound at the beauty and also at the raw power of nature unleashed. There any many families that visit the Niagara Falls to enjoy its splendor and beauty. It is not just possible to complete the tour of these falls in just one day and one needs to watch it for a couple of times before they can relish their heart and be satisfied. It takes so much time to be satisfied when one visits any famous tourist spot and it is the same case with the Niagara Falls that lies on the border of America and Canada.

Watching these grand falls at daytime and returning back is not enough. You should not miss out on the excellent light effects that are displayed during the night. There are some light effects that are not turned daily and only on alternative days. In order to see the Niagara Falls hotel in its entirety, you need to stay in the vicinity for a couple of days. When you are spending a good sum of money on transportation charges to Niagara and back, it makes sense that you spend a few days over there. Fortunately, there are a number of excellent hotels where you can stay for a few days to enjoy the falls in their entirety.

There are different classes of such hotels and they are suitable for different types of budgets. Just log into the Internet and do a search for Niagara Falls hotel and you will come across many results. The best option is to determine your budget first. Plan how much you will be spending and from that deduct the transportation costs. Once this is done, you should also deduct some amount for purchasing souvenirs. When you are visiting such a renowned landmark, you should not miss out the souvenirs that are available in the myriad shops in the neighborhood. Next you need to plan the food costs and this depends on how much you will eat in the hotel you are planning to reside in and how much will you eat outside.

It is better too, to keep a small amount apart for emergencies. Now that you have a reasonable idea of the money you have left, go ahead and book a hotel that fits. Most hotels have their presence on the web and you can check out their site for tariffs. These online portals also provide the visitors with a calculator that can be used to calculate the exact lodging costs. Just fill up the same with the number of persons you will be traveling with (there is a special field for entering details about kids below 12 years of age) and select the arrival and departure date and time. You will be provided with the costs entailed for the same. If so required, you can check out other hotels till you have found one that meets your budget.
The History Of Niagara Falls
Over the years there have been a number of people who have tried to travel down Niagara Falls in a barrel, or other means. While these people may seem to have a death wish this stunt looks like it will continue for years to come. Many people have successfully crossed the falls by walking a tightrope, but it is the barrel stunts that are the most intriguing.

The first successful barrel stunt took place on July 11th, 1886. An Englishman, Carlisle Graham, traveled over the falls in a barrel that he had constructed himself. Luckily, he was a barrel maker by trade, and the barrel held up to the stress.

The first duo to travel the falls in a barrel was George Potts and William Hazlett. They used a barrel built by Carlisle Graham for the stunt on August 8th, 1886.

In November, 1886, the first male and female team successfully navigated the falls in a barrel. George Hazlett and his girlfriend Sadie Allen both survived the stunt without major injury.

The first woman to die whilst attempting the barrel stunt was Maude Willard. She took her pet dog with her in her barrel on September 7th, 1901. She died, but her dog survived.

Willard entered the barrel with her pet dog for the journey through the rapids. As the barrel reached the Whirlpool it became stranding for the next six hours in the middle.

The first woman to travel over the falls in a barrel was a woman named Annie Taylor. On October 24th, 1901, she succeeded in an airtight wooden barrel that had been pressurized using a bicycle pump. Unfortunately her stunt did not lead to great riches, and she eventually died penniless.

On July 25th, 1911, the first person in a non-wooden barrel succeeded. Bobby Leach used a steel barrel, rather than Annie's wooden one. Unlike Annie, he was seriously injured during the plunge, and broke both of his kneecaps and his jaw.

One of the more bizarre attempts to travel over the falls was attempted on July 11th, 1920. An Englishman, named Charles Stephens, used a wooden barrel with an anvil for ballast. He had tied himself to the anvil and, when it was recovered, the barrel was empty, apart from his right arm. The rest of his body had been taken to the bottom by the anvil.
