The History Of Travel

    View:
In 1934 Harrow became part of the urban district of Middlesex. On 4th May 1954 the urban district gained the status of municipal borough, which later went on to become the London Borough of Harrow. In 2004 Harrow celebrated its 50th anniversary as London Borough of Harrow, and was visited by HRM Queen Elizabeth II.

Harrow is situated in North West London and is on the leafy border of Hertfordshire. It is a stone throw away from London's vibrant West End.

Harrow has a wealth of history; Harrow on the Hill is home to the prestigious public school Harrow Boys School, founded in 1572 and has educated seven prime ministers including British Prime Minster Sir Winston Churchill, and India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Neru. The school's fourth form room was used as a backdrop in JK Rowling movie Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone.

It has one of the last remaining Saxon churches in England St Mary's Church which is over 900 years old. The hill offers winding Victorian streets, and on a clear day from top of the hill at the famous 'peachy stone' you can see panoramic views across London.

Stanmore is home to two famous churches. St John the Evangelist church is one of the most romantic ruins in London, the Victorian prime Minster Lord Aberdeen tomb was recently discovered in the church's crypt. St Lawerence church a grade 1 listed building is one of the very few painted Baroque churches in existence today. The ornate walls and ceilings were painted by Laguerre a French artist. Handel was also once the resident organist here.

Harrow has also been home to many famous celebrities, these have included Sir Elton John & Ronnie Barker who were brought up in Pinner, Billy Idol, Peter Andre and Tom Fletcher from McFly were born in Harrow, James Blunt & Sir Winston Churchill were educated at Harrow Boys School, Mark Ramprakash lived in Hatch End and Simon Le Bon lived in North Harrow.

Present day harrow has it all. It is a cosmopolitan suburb in a big city, which has attracted people from all over UK & the world making it culturally diverse. 41.2% of its population are from an ethnic community, the largest group being from the Gujarati community. It has had a growing number of people settling from Somalia, Eastern Europe and Ireland. A large number of the Jewish community live in Hatch End and Stanmore.

Harrow has two main shopping centres, St Ann's shopping centre that was opened by Princess Diana in 1987 and St George's shopping centre a smaller mall that has a nine screen Vue cinema and a gym, which was opened by Catherine Zeta Jones. Every Sunday Pinner has the farmers market where you can stock up on your fruit & Vegetables, meat, fish and much more.

Harrow is also home to University of Westminster & Northwick Park Hospital. It has a string of restaurants that caters for all. You can choose from Michelin rated gourmet cuisine, international cuisine, brave the hottest curries or enjoy traditional pub food.
