Kos sits in the middle of the Dodecanese chain of Greek islands and is the third largest in the Dodecanese after Rhodes and Karpathos. It is a long, thin island and is also mostly flat. Kos been one of the most popular package holiday destinations for many years. All around Kos town you can find signs of the past, reminders of the civilisations that once passed through its harbour.



The villages of this mountainous area were at one time the centre of life on the island. From just out side Kos Town, you can travel through several traditional island villages.

In all is a tourist resorts, various tourist shops selling clothes, souvenirs and items for the beach are available. The island of Kos produces fine porcelains, ceramics, jewellery and weavings. The markets are a lively places, often with street entertainment.

The island is the liveliest island of the Dodecanese, proposing a wide and rich choice in terms of entertainment. The two streets Diakon and Nafklirou streets are where the night life is. Many taverns have live Greek Music and the possibility to see or dance

it. For a quieter night out try the Orfeus summer cinema on Vassileos Yeoriou, to the south east of the harbour near the yacht marina.

The island is popular with families with small children because of the number of safe sandy beaches. Lambi Beach is located in the town of Kos and stretches for one kilometre. The south coast seas are calmer here but they are also cooler than in the north.

The annual Hippocrates Festival this festival includes cultural events such as traditional and modern dance recitals, concerts by local artists, performances of both ancient and contemporary Greek plays and numerous art exhibitions.

Kos Museum built by the Italians in the 1930s to display mostly Hellenistic and Roman sculptures and mosaics uncovered on the island. The museum's atrium showing how Hippokrates and Pan once welcomed Asklepius, the god of healing, to this, the birth place of Western medicine.

Kos is the island of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. The huge Hippocrates tree, has a trunk of almost 40 feet in circumference, stands in front of the Knights Castle entrance and to the right of the harbour. It is one of the towns most famous sights. It is thought that Hippocrates actually planted this tree himself, making this most likely the oldest tree in Europe.
