The Importance Of Touch

    View:
Studies of newborn rhesus monkeys performed by Dr. Harry Harlow, show that these same monkeys when given a choice between two surrogate "mothers," one made of terrycloth, the other of wire and had food, overwhelmingly the baby monkeys chose the mother that could provide warmth and comfort. It was found that the young monkeys clung to the terrycloth mother whether it provided them with food or not, and that the young monkeys chose the wire surrogate only when it provided food. They would eat their food and return to the terrycloth mother for comfort.

In other research studies, when baby monkeys were placed with mannequin mothers at birth it showed that, despite the efforts of the baby monkeys to get a response through touching and holding the mannequins, the lack of a parental response caused sadness, stunted development, and failure to thrive in the young monkeys. Scientists suspect that lack of bonding in human babies causes similar problems.

Luckily for us humans, most infants are ready to bond immediately. Parents, on the other hand, may have mixed feelings about it. Many parents feel an intense attachment within the first moments or days after their baby's birth. For others, especially if baby is adopted or has been placed in intensive care, this all important bonding may take a bit longer.

Bonding is a process, and is not something that takes place within a few moments of time or is limited to happening within a certain time period after baby's arrival. For many families, bonding happens naturally as the result of everyday care giving. It is quite possible you may not even know it is happening until you observe your baby's first smile, make eye contact, and suddenly realize that you're filled with love for your new baby.

If you want to encourage your bonding to happen you may wish to try massaging your baby. By massaging your infant you are helping to encourage your bond through skin-to-skin and eye-to-eye contact. This type of loving interaction helps you, as the parent, to recognize your baby's unique cues and respond appropriately. Meeting your little one's needs assists in building a lifelong bond of love and trust.

The best way to get started is to take an infant massage class or private lessons so that you can learn the many benefits of infant massage, as well as numerous strokes that you and baby may enjoy. Not all parents and babies like all of the massage strokes, but having a variety of massage strokes in your memory bank will help to vary the massage with your baby as they grow and develop different likes and dislikes. Through finding a special massage that works for you, your family bond will continue to strengthen and grow.

The Importance Of Touch
That is why most experts, pediatricians and doctors would advise taking greater care of the baby's skin. It is just sad to learn that there are parents and nannies, who are not very much educated about how to properly handle and take care of the baby's skin.

Touch is basically how newborn babies start to communicate. The warmth touch of the mom to baby's skin is basically what the infant first encounters.

Remember that after birth, it would take a few days before the eyes clears up, while the sense of taste is still not developed fully. Through touch, the baby is given an assurance of warmth, love, security and protection. And the baby somehow feels that. Thus, a mother's touch is a good pacifier to an uncomfortable and fussing baby.

Experts assert that aside from that, the mother's touch is providing much more than just warmth and passion to baby skin. When a mom touches and holds her baby, she is unconsciously stimulating the secretion and production of the baby's hormones for growth and more effective digestion. The mom's touch to the baby is just like how massage is good and health-conducive to average adult.

The sense of touch also complements and bolsters the development of all other senses of the baby. For instance, mom's touch helps the baby initially discern verbal language and words used by the mom.

For example, when a mom says the word, 'my baby', along with touching baby's skin, the baby is learning how to associate the words with the warmth and pleasantness of the touch. After some time, the baby would learn how to listen to words although he or she would not be able to totally understand it yet. Eventually, the sense of touch would be separated and disassociated with the verbal communication or comprehension.

Aside from that, the baby's sense of touch very much tells about how the baby's overall health is doing. When the baby is feeling bad, a mom could tell that something is wrong if the skin temperature is unusually high. Aside from that, a mom could sense a discomfort in the baby through the infant's skin. Redness and swelling indicates that there is something troubling and annoying the baby.

That is why the sense of touch is practically deemed appropriate and useful to the baby. Because of that, there of course is a need to ensure that the baby's skin is always well taken care of. Thus, as much as possible, it is imperative that baby skin care be always made conducive and very much in good status.

Remember that taking care of the baby's skin is far different from taking care of the skin of a child, a teenager and an adult. Baby's skin is still very fragile and sensitive to handle it with extra care and make every touch as smooth and as passionate as possible.
