The Magic Flute was first performed at the Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, where librettist Emanuel Schikaneder was running the theater. Though neither man could know it before hand the opera would be the last one that Mozart would complete. They started their collaboration in May of 1791, ten years after they first became friends. The two men were both suffering financial crisis and worked together in the hopes that the opera they were working on would be their salvation. The opera was based on Zauberopern, a popular operatic form of the day which focused on mythological tales that featured outrageous turns of events and incredible stage effects.
Despite some initial uncertainty in the project, Mozart decided to pick it up and wrote the entire opera over that summer. The opera is closely connected to freemasonry, considering that both Mozart and Schikaneder were deeply involved members of the Masons. The story itself is interwoven with symbolism and thoughts from Mozart’s youth to the time that he wrote the opera. The opera was considered highly significant by Masons at the time, and would continue to be an important piece to them over the years.
