Although Nevada may not necessarily be different than most states in the process of getting auto insurance or registration, the newly arrived citizen may find the following information helpful for their moving checklist as a refresher course or reminder. Nevada is one of the highest growth states in the U.S. so hopefully the following will be helpful to a few who stumble upon this article.



DMV.org can send you to any state's government DMV page, but when you get to Nevada's check the one for new residents and you can simply follow the links and helpful material. This article will be a brief on two of the major subjects: getting your new Nevada auto insurance and getting your car registered.

Car Insurance Requirements

If you are making the move to Nevada you will want to get out that old registration and insurance information. Keep in mind that if you are still insured from the other state you resided in then you probably won't worry about this step unless your insurance expires and you want to establish something local.

Note that the insurance company needs to be done by a Nevada auto insurance carrier that is licensed. Nevada requires that at least liability insurance is obtained, and that the owner's name on the insurance and registration are a match.

Minimums on the coverage have to be at least $15,000/$30,000/$10,000. That is $15k for bodily injury or death in the case of an accident, $15k for bodily injury or death of one person in any one accident, and $10k for destruction of property of others in an accident.

Nevada has a Verification Response system which will notify you by mail for proof of insurance. That will give you about 20 days to provide them proof. Be careful to get this done or provide proof before they send this out to you, because if you let this lapse the state will revoke the registration and you will be forced to pay a $250 reinstatement fee when you show them the insurance proof.

Registering the Automobile

Thirty days is the time frame to register your car or truck when you arrive in Nevada and settle in. That goes for getting your license changed. Failure on that is again at the $250 mark.

The checklist from the DMV includes the following for submission to get the registration created:

- Current registration certificate and license plates

- Nevada emissions certificate (if needed, it may vary to the year of the car)

- Title or certificate of ownership (may or may not be necessary but bring it just in case)

- VIN verification form (have the number written down and complete the rest in the DMV office)

- Money to pay the fees

- Valid proof of Nevada auto insurance
