"My thighs are flabby; I definitely should not be seen in a bathing suit."
"My hair is flat; why can't I have hair like hers?"
"My nose is too large. I wonder how much plastic surgery costs?"
How do you feel when you have these Negative Body Thoughts? Inadequate, worthless, like a failure? Every time you engage in Negative Body Thoughts, you reinforce a sense of not being good enough.
Negative Body Thoughts can also be aimed at others. When you meet other people, do you ever think:
"She's thinner than I am, so she is more successful and more beautiful."
"She should exercise more; I bet she doesn't belong to a gym."
"I have a smaller waist-line than she does, so I am slightly better."
We constantly and chronically compare ourselves to other women, sizing up our self-worth by our relative body size.
This Negative Body Talk is particularly cruel and hurtful among children, teens, and adolescents. Young women grow up learning that their self-worth is directly related to their clothing size.
In order to change how we feel about ourselves, we need to change how we talk to ourselves. If we want to feel vibrant, energetic, and creative, we need to view ourselves with love, compassion, acceptance, and understanding. If we want our daughters to grow up feeling strong, confident, and worthwhile, we need to teach them how to talk to themselves in positive ways.
Here are some tips for changing your body talk:
- Become aware of your habitual thought patterns. Most of us don't even realize what we are thinking most of the time. Train yourself to observe your thoughts and their influence on your wellbeing.
- Once you become aware of your thoughts, take steps to change them. Whenever you notice a negative body thought, gently redirect your attention to a positive body thought instead. When you notice yourself criticizing your body or other people's bodies, replace the criticism with something positive.
- Learn to meditate. During the process of meditation you turn your attention inward and focus on your breath or a mantra. Through meditation you will learn to witness your thoughts and over time you'll be able to replace your negative thought processes with more positive ones.
Refuse to participate in negative body talk! If you notice your friends talking negatively about their bodies or anyone else's, refuse to participate! Instead, talk about what is beautiful, meaningful, and worthwhile in everyone you know.
If you're a parent, teach your child positive self-talk. Teach her how to affirm her body and herself with her thoughts, words, and actions. She will reap the benefit for her entire lifetime!
When you learn to talk about your body and yourself in a positive light, you will slowly cultivate a relationship with yourself that is full of love, joy, enthusiasm, and vitality. The Positive Power Of Negative Thinking
The Law of Attraction is the latest buzz phrase! It literally is beginning to have a celebrity status because of the media exposure it’s receiving. It’s everywhere and it’s about time! Here’s why: All living things on this planet operate through the law of attraction. We as humans simply have the choice to choose which thoughts will create our life. Each and every one of us has the power to intentionally think and create our lives with our minds. Our minds actually shape the world around us! The law of attraction is always at work and negative thinking equals fatal attraction!
This particular article is written to give you the reader a basic understanding of how this law works in your life, every second of every minute of every day! There is absolutely no way to escape this law. It’s the same thing with the law of gravity. We can’t escape it. We all know that if you drop an object it’s going to eventually hit the next closest surface whether we want it to or not.
I specialize in transformational growth programs focusing on self mastery and empowerment. The law of attraction is something I consider to be the first step that must be understood in order to achieve the desired changes in ones own personal life.
The basic definition of the Law of Attraction is as follows: “I attract to my life whatever I give my attention, energy and focus to, whether it’s positive or negative." It’s not a mystery, nor a secret! This law has been documented as early as the 1800’s. Knowing the basics of how this law operates in your own life will begin the journey of personal transformation for yourself if you are willing to do the work and make simple changes to your thought patterns.
To understand the law of attraction you must understand the power of your mind. Because what you think about and what you visualize, you create. Your thoughts become real things! What this means is that everything that comes into your life you are attracting it into your life by the power of your mind, both positive and negative experiences. It’s attracted to you by the images you’re holding in your mind, because pictures or images ARE thoughts! We think in pictures, therefore what we see in our mind, we create. It’s what you’re thinking that you are attracting. Whatever is going on in your mind you are attracting to yourself. You are the magnet! This means that it is only you who calls the law of attraction into action. You are the creator! It is you that sends out the thought to attract that very thing to yourself. Even what you don’t want, you attract by your thoughts because where your attention goes, your energy flows.
You’re wondering, okay if it’s this easy than why am I attracting all the bad stuff instead of the good? As stated, the problem is, most people focus on and think about what they don’t want a good majority of their waking day. That my friend, is called fatal attraction! The law of attraction responds only to the thoughts and pictures in your mind. It doesn’t care whether you perceive something to be good or bad, or whether you don’t want it or do want it. It simply responds to the signals or commands that you are sending out. Therefore, you must state what you do want in the positive and filter out the words don’t, not and no. Remember, your mind works in pictures and if you say I don’t want to be mad, you are creating the picture in your mind of being mad. You must create the opposite of what you don’t want.
So how does this work? Let me give you an example. When you go to a restaurant and place your food order, you expect your food to arrive exactly as you asked for it. When you go to the hair dresser and you tell the stylist what it is that you want, you expect your hair to be styled exactly how you asked for it. When you take your car in for an oil change, you expect your oil to be changed. That’s exactly how the law of attraction works! You place your order by the thoughts and images that you hold in your mind and the Universe delivers your order exactly how you placed it!
Let’s apply this to our lives. Thinking negative thoughts is literally a fatal attraction because all that negativity you focused your energy, your thoughts on, is now coming full throttle back to you! Everything you didn’t want is now being served to you. Remember you placed your order to the Universe (who is your waitress) with your negative thoughts and the Universe (your waitress) is doing its job by giving you exactly what you asked for.
So how do we change this? You only focus on what you do want. Let’s use money as an example. If you are walking around thinking all day about the lack of money you have, the bills that are piling up, that you can’t afford the things you want, etc. what do you think you are ordering from the Universe? More lack of money, more bills and more of not being able to buy what you want! The Universe is delivering to you exactly what you are ordering through the pictures and thoughts you held in your mind.
Let’s play a game so you can understand this concept. I’m going to ask you right now to not think about an ice-cream cone. What happened? You thought of an ice-cream cone didn’t you? You see the mind does not understand the words don’t, not and no. Let’s try this again. Don’t think about a cup of coffee. What happened? You thought about a cup of coffee! Don’t think about the colour pink. What happened? You thought about the colour pink.
Keep this in mind to help you. Whenever you are thinking throughout your day, visualize a personal assistant standing beside you taking notes. Know that your assistant is sending these notes to the Universe so your order CAN and WILL be filled. Knowing you have an assistant taking your notes every second of the day begin to focus only on what you DO want. Change the focus of your thoughts. Think and visualize the abundance of money you have, see your bills being paid easily and quickly and that you always have enough money to buy whatever you want.
I know right now you are saying, “but Lisa I don’t have a lot of money, and I’m struggling to make ends meet so how can I focus on these things when I don’t even have them?" Begin right now by being GRATEFUL for everything you do have. This will help you begin to feel better about your situation. Thinking about how grateful you are for the money that you do have, for the food you have in your cupboards, for the clothes you have, the home you live in, etc. will send out your specific order to the Universe and what do you think will return to you when you are omitting a positive thought? You bet, more things to be grateful for! It’s very important to have an attitude of gratitude all the time. I invite you to start a gratitude journal today. Carry it with you everywhere you go and enter as many sentences throughout the day as you possibly can! Start each sentence with, “Thank you Universe! I am filled with such happiness, joy and gratitude for …"
Remember that you must focus your attention 95% of the day on positive thoughts in order to benefit from the positive law of attraction. Thinking positive thoughts only for a few seconds then returning to your old negative thought patterns will manifest your negative thoughts. The law of attraction delivers to you the most predominate thoughts that you think about and your life is the mirror of your predominate thoughts. If you take a moment and have an honest look at your life through this mirror, you will see beyond a shadow of doubt what your predominate thoughts are. Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts.
