A symbol carries with it the unique ability to allow people to attach certain meanings to it. Symbols are not people, even though people might create a symbol, and because of that, symbols can often transcend the issues that face people, and still retain its significance.
A brand is the symbol that represents your company, and a brand name can have the same kind of impact that a symbol can have.
Often a brand name can survive through a turmoil that helps temporarily bring down a companies image, if the brand is strong enough. Take Disney as an example. Throughout the late seventies and into the early eighties their animated film department greatly suffered.
Animation in general was on the downturn, and being a leader in the market, Disney felt the biggest impact from this, losing money on the few animated ventures they embarked on, until they practically stopped making any by the mid-eighties. It wasn't until a few years later the genre would recover and become large again.
But the Disney brand name is one of wonderment and appeal to children. Even though their movies weren't doing as well, the company's image never really faltered, because the core of the brand had become a symbol in our society for children's entertainment.
The reason a brand becomes strong is because the company who creates it makes themselves known as a leader in the market they embrace. They find an image that suits them perfectly and do everything they can to keep that image strong. Wal-Mart is the king of low-prices within the retail world while Target has become known for its better atmosphere. Even though both are in the same industry, each has created a strong brand for themselves.
To spread your brand you need to embrace it wholeheartedly. All of the business card printing you get done needs to have your brand covering it. Every advertisement you send out needs to have your brand name somewhere on it. A logo is the heart of a strong brand, and if you want to create a brand that survives over the years, you'll need a strong logo for your company.
No matter how good your company is, if you aren't actively linking your brand name with your company than it won't do you any good. Business card printing is a particularly good example of ways to get your brand strong because business cards are a physical representation of your company, and because people often hand them out in person, it creates a strong link between you, your company, and your brand name, all at once.
The best companies are the ones with brands capable of being known as more than just a company. The stronger your brand becomes, the more integrated your company will become within society, and that should be the goal of every company.
