It is a university town. Bangor also became the centre of higher education for north Wales with the establishment of the Normal College in 1862, the University College in 1884 and St Mary's College in 1893.

The beautiful Victorian pier is the second longest in Wales at 1,500 feet and offers a stunning view across the Menai Straits. Constructed largely in steel, with cast iron columns and screw piles.

The grounds include park land, an extensive exotic tree and shrub collection and a Victorian walled garden.

Bangor Cathedral is a ancient place of Christian worship situated in Bangor. The site has been in use since the 6th century . It was founded in 525, more than 70 years before Canterbury Cathedral. The Cathedral has an excellent choir. It is small and it has no museum.

Bangor Football Club was formed in 1876 and based at Maes-y-Dref, Hirael, in Bangor. The teams' first choice strip is royal blue shirts, royal blue shorts and royal blue socks. The second choice strip is varsity red shirts, white shorts and white socks.

Bangor City F.C. is one of Wales' older foot ball clubs.
