For safety reasons, all students are provided with safety harnesses that can be fastened at the waist while they are in training. These devices provide the gymnast with additional support and varying degrees of mobility. There are many sports that have adapted gymnastics into their training programs. Football players have benefited from gymnastics because it provides them with the dexterity to move more quickly after the ball is snapped. Some cheerleaders would not have been selected for cheerleading if they had not enrolled in a gymnastics program to learn how to perform the cartwheels and handstands that are part of cheerleading.
