The Swine Flu Vaccine

    View:
As the news fills up with story after story about the latest pandemic to strike, and fills you with fear as they are meant to do, don't worry since the government will protect you. They have contracted with their friends in the drug industry to create a shot that will shield you from this deadly virus. There's just one problem. It hasn't been properly tested as most new drugs and vaccines are. The typical length of time it takes for a new drug to get approval and come to market is usually measured in years and for a vaccine it's between 5 and six months.

So governments worldwide are very worried about swine flu approaching pandemic levels and are doing everything they can to speed up development and production of a vaccine to treat it.. It has been estimated that more than 200 million doses of the vaccine will be needed, and there is no way that enough vaccine can be manufactured in time, so the government has fast-tracked the use of adjuvants to boost the strength of the vaccine thereby reducing the amount necessary in each dose. And therein lies the problem.

As far as I know, there has never been an adjuvant approved for use with flu vaccines in the U.S. and now it looks likely that the government will give approval to the use of several vaccines which contain adjuvants, without the proper testing. In fact, one of the adjuvants being tested for use with the swine flu vaccine is squalene.

It has been reported that vaccinations which contained squalene were given to gulf war veterans that reported cases of Gulf War Syndrome. Since that time, many veterans that received these vaccinations have reported varying illnesses, many of them of the auto-immune kind. Which simply means the body's immune system doesn't just attack an invader, such as a virus, as it normally does. It attacks the body itself, in the joints - arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, the lungs - as in chronic bronchial infections. The list of diseases linked to squalene goes on and on. And it apparently worsens as times goes on.

So this little missive is just to warn any concerned person or parent - as the government seems hell bent on making these vaccinations available to school age children - about the dangers that such vaccinations might represent. Remember that drug companies stand to make hundreds of millions of dollars of profit very quickly and with very little work on their part and so they might not be too squeamish if any ill effects present themselves to the vaccinated years down the road.

I don't know what would motivate the powers that be to approve the use of an adjuvant with such a checkered past, but I do know I'll be refusing any vaccine that includes an adjuvant that hasn't been properly tested, and especially one that contains squalene in any form.

The Swine Flu Vaccine
When it comes to flu vaccine orders, doctors and other vaccine providers face a number of uncertainties each year. Influenza vaccine distribution will often take place in a phased fashion that can occur over a number of months, beginning in late summer for some manufacturers and sometimes completing as late as November or early December. This phased distribution model can leave healthcare professionals in a quandary, unsure if their vaccine will arrive in time for their flu clinics.

The CDC website notes that most manufacturers and distributors attempt to get at least a portion of requested vaccine orders to providers early in the season, so that clinics can begin vaccinating high-risk patients (people 50 years of age and older or those with chronic health conditions such as asthma, kidney disease, diabetes, lung disease and weakened immune system) and their household contacts. But basically, flu vaccine purchasers have been burdened with uncertainties about quantities and delivery dates, until three years ago.

In 2006, FFF Enterprises, the nation's largest distributor of flu vaccine, launched an innovative program -- MyFluVaccine (www.MyFluVaccine.com) -- in an effort to streamline the distribution process. Unlike the traditional flu vaccine delivery system, with its uncertain delivery dates and quantities, MyFluVaccine gives healthcare providers the ability to choose the exact date they wish to receive their flu vaccine with the certainty of knowing it will arrive on time.

?Traditionally, healthcare providers have been at the mercy of suppliers and distributors about when their flu vaccine order will be delivered and if the quantity will be what they ordered,? explains Patrick M. Schmidt, chief executive officer, FFF Enterprises. ?This unpredictability created many challenges to a successful clinic, including planning difficulties, storage issues and a potential inability to educate and vaccinate patients in a timely manner.?

?Our customers told us that they would often lose patients to whatever facility received its vaccine first,? adds Chris Ground, senior vice-president, FFF Enterprises. ?MyFluVaccine gives these providers the ability to select specific delivery dates for their vaccine, which allows them to plan vaccination clinics with the confidence of knowing their flu vaccine will arrive on time. It's revolutionized the industry.?

Of course, even with precision ordering and delivery, purchasers still face the risk of having unused vaccine left over at the end of the season. In response, Schmidt says the company factored the first-of-its-kind 100% Return Guarantee for its Fluvirin? product into its ordering process this year, to remove yet another barrier for healthcare providers concerned about overestimating demand and being left with excess inventory at the end of flu vaccination season.

In addition to its easy ordering portal, the MyFluVaccine website provides news, updates, resources and clinic planning tools. There are special informative sections for consumers and employer groups, as well as providers. FFF has also produced a ?Flu Vaccine Myths & Facts? brochure that is downloadable as a PDF from the website, or as a printed booklet that healthcare providers can order for their patients.

With the 2009-2010 flu vaccine ordering season already in full swing, healthcare providers are encouraged to place their vaccine orders now. For more information, visit
