The country of Tanzania has many great attractions that can be included in any travel plans for the visitors of Tanzania. Some of the activities that one can indulge in include climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, go on a deep sea diving, scuba, and visit archeological sites like Olduvai Gorge among other activities.



For the sake of brevity, this article will highlight the attraction sites that are in the Northern Tanzania. The parks in this part are the Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro National Park and Serengeti National Park.

1. Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park has the highest population density of elephants in Tanzania. Located just a few hours drive from the town of Arusha, Tarangire is a popular stop for safaris travelling through the northern circuit on their way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Apart from elephants, gazelle, wildebeest, zebra, and giraffes ca also be sighted at this park

2. The Amazing Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is comprised of forest, woodland, grasslands, and swamps. Lake Manyara, an alkaline or soda-lake is host to thousands of flamingoes, at certain times of year, as well as other diverse bird life. Birds found within the park include ostrich, egrets, herons, pelicans and storks. The rare pygmy goose, various species of ibis and the African spoonbills have also been seen. While renowned for a large concentration of baboons, Lake Manyara Park is home to a large population of elephants, tree-climbing lions, buffalo, wildebeest, warthogs, and hippos that can be observed at a much closer range than in other parks.

3. Mt Kilimanjaro - Mount Kilimanjaro includes the highest peak in Africa and this has made it a popular tourist destination since its opening in 1977. Kilimanjaro was formed over 1 million years ago by volcanic movement along the Rift Valley. The highest summit is Uhuru Peak on Kibo, which is one of the Seven Summits of the world. The Seven Summits are a list of mountains that are the highest on their continent. Mountain climbing is the major motivation for visiting this park, and getting to the summit of this snow-capped mountain is a great achievement for mountain climbing enthusiasts the world over.

4. Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area adjoins the Serengeti National Park. The Ngorongoro is part of the Serengeti ecosystem and is contiguous with the southern Serengeti plains. These vast plains extend into the north to the unprotected areas of Loliondo division which are kept open to the wild animals by means of trans-human pastoralism practiced by Maasai

The Ngorongoro Crater is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and lies between Lake Manyara and the Serengeti at about 80 km west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. Ngorongoro Conservation Area was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and boasts of the largest intact caldera in the world. The bottom of the crater supports many wild animals and for those that are interested in bird watching, game viewing and game safaris will find this place fulfilling. Olduvai Gorge, a, archeological site is also found in this area.

5. Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National park is perhaps the most well known park in Tanzania and probably even worldwide. This park borders Masai Mara and it offers spectacular sceneries where one sees endless plains of grass tinged with the twisted shadows of acacia trees that create a beautiful image of the untaimed wild Africa. The park is home to many wild animals and the number of wild animals are staggering to the mind. One is able to easily see lions lying in the sun and elephants quietly feeding as they tear down the acacia barks while they move along the plains. Other wild animals that can be seen in this park include monkeys, gazelles, elands, giraffes and a whole number of other inspiring wild animals.

It is in the Serengetin National park that the Great Wilderbeest migration, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World takes place where over one million wild animals including wilderbeests and zebras make their annual trek from Tanzania to Kenya in Maasai Mara to look for food. For those that have enough money they can opt to take a hot air balloon safari where they will be able to track the animals from the air.
