We all want our kids to be independent and at the same time help us with the chores at home. But before the kids start helping us around in the kitchen and learn a thing or two about cooking, they should be aware of all the basic precautions so that they stay healthy even if they are living and cooking alone.



But before you embark on the journey of teaching them cooking, you should first teach them the importance of cleanliness. Kids should understand why to keep their hands clean and hair tied or covered, not to lick fingers while cooking, keeping the raw and cooked vegetables separate. This will also help in keeping illnesses at bay. It is also very important to teach them why not to cook food at very high or low temperatures.

Before you start cooking with the kids it is a good idea to read out the recipe so that nothing is missed out and all the ingredients and appliances required are available easily at hand. Stick to the exact process for the most authentic taste.

While telling the kids recipes, also tell them why and how a particular appliance is used. In case of electrical appliances, teach them how to save electricity by turning them off when not in use and how to protect themselves against electric shock by always keeping your hands dry and wearing bathroom slippers or shoes.

Teach the kids why hot pads are important in the kitchen. It is also important for them to understand why they should not taste food from a hot spoon or put a finger in hot food. Kids must understand that at all times they should take maximum precaution so as to protect themselves from any kind of burn injury. Kids should also be taught how to remove hot trays in from the oven and also what to do in case of a burn injury in the kitchen.

Keep the knives sharpened so that any cutting work can be done quickly without any hassles. Also dull knives can be quite dangerous as they slip rather than cutting the surface of the vegetables.

The kids should be taught never to throw water on hot stove and also to call the adults or the neighbors or 911 in case of an emergency.

The kids must be taught not get tempted to taste the food until it is fully cooked. And even if you must taste the food, it must be done only using a clean spoon and the food should be allowed to cool down first. The same spoon should not be used twice so that the germs or the bacteria from your mouth don't get mixed with the food.

Use the free time during cooking to clean the dishes, kitchen counter, to put the balance unused ingredients and appliances in place.

The kids should learn as early as possible about the basic cooking so that they don't have to rely on junk food for filling their stomach when they grow up.
