Things Happen For Reason

    View:
Does everything happen for a reason? I would answer that question both yes and no. I answer, "No" to those who mean that no matter what happens, God has a reason for either allowing it to happen, or, as some believe, making it happen.

I answer, "Yes" because there is a cause and effect. The result is the effect, and the reason it happened is the cause. Let me give you an example.

Almost every driver knows that for their car engine to operate properly it needs to have the proper amount of oil. If it runs out of oil, it will ruin the engine. So, if someone's engine gets ruined for a lack of oil, was that just meant to be? Don't things happen for a reason? Yes, and in this case, the reason was a lack of oil.

Hopefully, for that example, most will agree. But let's try another example. I'll stay with the automobile for this next example too.

Suppose you have a flat tire. Was it just meant to be? Everything happens for a reason. But, wait. Someone stops to help you with your flat tire and over the course of the changing of the tire, you say something to that person that really helps them.

Now there are some who will argue that the flat tire happened for a reason. They believe that God had a hand in it. He wanted you to be at a precise location at a precise time so that the other person would stop to help.

With that kind of thinking, we have driven off the road and are now trying to drive in the lagoon. It's a sinking theory. It really challenges the free will that God gave us.

Suppose that you were so upset or distracted with the flat tire that you didn't speak anything to the person helping you with your flat tire, other than, "Thanks for the help." Some people will argue, "Well God knew you were going to speak to them."

Now I know this debate has been around for a long time. And I am certainly not going to try to present a thesis on it in this short article. But regardless of what opinion you have on the subject, ask yourself this question. If God knows what I am going to do, and what I am going to say, then do I have any choice in the matter?

If that is true then everything is meant to be. And perhaps that's the reason why everything happens, it is all just meant to be. And that leaves the door wide open for lots of unaccountability. "There must be a reason why I robbed the store; I guess it was just meant to be!"

Now I truly believe that God can and does get involved in the affairs of man. I also believe that His thoughts and His ways are far beyond the thinking of mortal man. I have seen God work in my life in remarkable ways. I am sure you have too.

I know that God certainly works in individuals on a personal level. His guiding is there. There are times that you just know you should do something, and other times that you shouldn't.

Those who excel at this are those who, wherever they are and whatever they are doing, have a habit of asking God if there is something that they should or could do. I understand all of that.

I just think we need to be careful about what we blame God for. It's all too easy to say, "That flat tire happened for a reason," all the while thinking that it was God Who did it for a reason. If you are speaking on God's behalf, you ought to be really certain that you are accurate!

Let's not throw away the free will that God gave to us. Remember that in all of life we have choices. We can choose to be negative or we can choose to be positive. We can choose to help people or we can choose to ignore them. And we can choose to ask God if there is something special that He would have us do or say.

So, yes, everything does happen for a reason.
Things Happen For Reason
Last week I got a call from an acquaintance of mine. He said, 'Remember that conversation we had about Africa a few weeks ago? Well, I just checked my e-mail and you won't believe it. I won an international lottery originating in Africa. You know, I'm just convinced everything happens for a reason, don't you think?'

Before I responded, I thought about this a moment. 'You know, maybe you're right. Everything does happen for a reason. It's a very fortuitous thing that you called me today to tell me about this, for example.' I went on to explain that these international lotteries are a scam, none of them are real, and that it's a good thing he called to tell me about it so that I could explain the scam to him.

This conversation made me stop and really think about how people are looking for supporting evidence for what they want in their environment. In this case, my acquaintance saw our conversation about Africa as supporting evidence, or a coincidence, when he received the e-mail about winning the lottery from Africa. He added two and two together, but came up with a wrong answer.

I didn't like bursting his bubble, but it kept him from losing money. But it was also a valuable lesson for both of us. For me, I realized the use of this language pattern or phrase, can be used in persuasion with amazing results, enabling us to influence in a deep and profound way.

Why is it that people look for supporting evidence? Well, I think it's because we live in an unstable world. Whenever there's a lack of stability, people become upended and turn to religion, turn to God, turn to spirituality, and they become more and more superstitious.

If you don't believe in God, or you're not a spiritual person, my point is not to influence you towards or away from anything except towards a language pattern or away from not being as successful as you like, that you'll be able to use these patterns for your benefit and for the benefit of your clients. As I explain this pattern to you, please understand, my goal is to break things down in a way that gives us tremendous power with our language, our words and persuasion, and in so doing, help you to have more success in your life. That's my purpose in this discussion.

When I told my acquaintance that 'everything does happen for a reason' I was implying and alluding to something much more than what he understood had happened. I said, 'It's a good thing we are talking because. . .' This sets the stage for me to have an entry point into his mind, and I was able to explain the difficulty he might have faced if he were to move forward with this lottery e-mail he received.

As persuaders we can give our clients and prospects the supporting evidence they are looking for. The phrase 'everything happens for a reason' is very popular right now in our unstable times, and we can utilize it very powerfully to our advantage in selling our products and services.

Let's say you're an adviser and you're talking with someone, and they say something positive like, 'Wow, it's a good thing that I'm talking with you here today because I feel like I'm really getting somewhere in my learning, in my understanding of how all this works.' And your response could be, 'Fantastic, after all, there are no accidents, right?'

Is that a stretch to say? I don't think it's a stretch for anybody, no matter what our belief system is. After all, everything happens for a reason, it's just a matter of whether or not it's a reason you like.

No language pattern is an island and our goal as persuaders is to layer pattern upon pattern and these patterns piece together a deeper sense of reality when you do this right, what you're going to be doing is using all sorts of these patterns at high speed.
